I have been thinking and I think a private walking tour by The Original London Walks would be a great. As far as I know we can pick one of the tours they offer or get a personalized one. I will call them tomorrow and inquire. They will probably require a minimun headcount but I am hoping more people will want to come. I will post updates.

I'd vote for something free personally... and I don't think their walks are geared to photographers so much as culture vultures...

Perhaps we can find out their routes and just do one on our own?

Stayed at the custom house hotel before. Nothing too special facilities wise, but clean/fresh and it had an ensuite, and I paid £19pppn for a shared double. It's right by custom house tube (DLR).

I'm in London from 20th August so might be able to swing in early for a GTG.

I'm in London from 19 July through 24 July. The Airshow at Farnborough is Sat/Sun (22/23). My plan was to be at the Airshow. Could be a venue for a get together with half a million of our closest friends. Or I could join an evening get together on the weekend. Or one during the week while I'm there.

Let me know final plan, okay?

The BBC actually have a few walks posted on their website. An example is shown below.

There seems to be only the one London walk on the BBC site. It looks very do-able and could be covered in an afternoon. I've always fancied strolling around Highgate Cemetary with a camera. Don't forget that Highgate Hill is where Dick Whittington heard the bells of London singing "Turn again, Whittington, lord mayor of London".

Put my name with a question mark up against the July dates.

Update: I've just read on the site I linked to:
Professional photography, video cameras and tripods are not allowed. Special arrangements can be made for project work, photographic societies, publications and professional use. It is necessary to telephone to discuss any possible arrangement and donation on 0208 340 1834

One of you Londoners like to get on the dog and bone? If you can get it off the ground then I'm definitely in. I accept the principle of making some donation to the administrators and I'll stand 1 pint of ale to everyone who tags along.

Looks like they won't be happy with a large group of people with pro-looking camera gear walking around :o/

For the Architecture III challenge I meandered from St Pauls down to Liverpool Street. This took in a lot of interesting buildings and, with the outside of St Pauls, offers some shots from on high. It is took in the Lloyds Building and the infamous Gherkin, as well as the Bank of England and one or two other famous London landmarks. Petticoat Lane can also be reached from Liverpool Street if you are into candids and shots of "cheeky cockney chappies" - not! (edit) Forgot the wonderful Leadenhall Market too!

As this is also on the same general area as the BBC walk, both could be combined with a little imagination into a full days shoot, with numerous hostelries en route.

Just a thought...

PS: as I was born within the sound of Bow Bells (at Hackney Mother's Home) I am officially a cockney. However, good schools and international travel have caused me to lose the accent, except when angry or "lubricated".

Maybe the prices are different beacuse of vaction and stuff.

xantangummi, I just checked on mrjet.se and the ticket are around 1000 SEK cheaper on the two August dates. Weird, but true.

Chiqui, I'm definitely interested in flying over for either of the two August dates!

I'll also be looking for an inexpensive hotel, so any more tips regarding places to stay are welcome.

i shot in highgate cemetary quite a few years ago, but the rul was in force then too. i just explained i was a holidaying photographer (holidaying from blackheath???), and i would love some shots of such a beautiful space. they seemed cool with that. if you go, definitely go to the older half. gorgeous, and much less ... managed than the newer side.

also, the city (the central banking district, within the old city walls)on a sunday is amazing. there are many little nooks and crannies that are extrememly od, hidden away, or little green spaces amidst the stone and concrete. on sunday, it's basically empty, as opposed to the weekdays, when it's crawling with people.

i used to be a courier in london. i wish i could be there for a city break soon!

We ( P2jvr + me) may be able to make one of the two dates on August - if Legalbeagle lets us have his guest bedroom for the weekend! We have been talking about a photographic w/e in London for ages and it would be great to meet up with others for part of it. Unless, of course, John decides to whisk me off to some hot Caribbean beach on the spur of the moment!!!

Oh, I hope John doesn't decide to whisk you off to a Caribbean island! It would be fun to finally meet you, Pauline. I remember when you and John hosted a gtg that I really wanted to attend, but wasn't able to.

Edit: Plus, I think that August is a terribly hot time to go to the Caribbean. Good for me!

Thanks Amy, it would be great to meet up with you and others. But I must admit the Caribbean island would still win out! We have gradually been working our way around them! And I love lots of hot sun! The hurricanes are a bit more problematic!

I hope we will be hosting another North Yorks GTG soonish - once my daughter's wedding is over in August we should be more free to make plans hence hoping to get to the London GTG.

What about Greenwich and Blackheath in south London? Have people already "done" that one?

John could whisk me off to a Caribbean island in your place, if you like, leaving you free to attend the GTG :)

I didn't read this whole thread but I just realized that I might be able to make the July 22 GTG, if it's still on. If not I might be in London at around that date or before. Hope to meet-up somewhere along the line.

I've just updated the original post to include everyone who's posted an interest here. Looks like it'll either be the 22nd July or 19th August...

We did Greenwich last at the GTG last June and the second GTG as well. Manic recommended we walk around the City and I think that's a great idea. There are a lot of interesting buildings, alleyways, etc there. I think we should do it in the late afternoon to avoid the crowds and get the good light. Anyone else up for a walk around the City?

That's fine, June. I was only being selfish in that Matthew (Legalbeagle) lives on the edge of the City (Brick Lane area) and we will be able to do that at any time. But I don't really mind - it would be good to meet up with everyone anywhere and the City does have lots of good photo opportunities without a doubt!

OK, at this point the two most popular dates are July 22nd and August 19th, so, can the maybes confirm one way or another so we can set on one of those?

I don't really know London at all. This will be a great weekend adventure for me to fly there and whatever the rest of you pick is fine with me! I'm just really looking forward to it, no matter what we do (as long as I don't have to eat any tripe soup, kidney pie or other weird food along those lines).
