One element of photography that we do not often think about is texture. Unless we really see something that has texture: an old barn or a rotting wall or a painted fire hydrant, it just doesn't cross our minds that this is something that can really create interest, especially when contrasted. (I know, I should be saying that 'I' don't think about it, but play along please!). However, I've been studying one photographer's work who seems to have an innate eye for texture in her photographs. You can find Frisca's profile page here.
It seems that where ever Pam (Frisca) looks, her eye is attracted by texture. Note how in this shot, texture is what really creates interest (in addition to good lighting, composition and posing, of course). The dress, the bells and the carpet all have different textures, and the most radically different are the bells, so they stick out as they should. She even desaturated the shot in order to put more emphasis on the textures and the forms.
For me, the texture of the coins assembled together--both Canadian and American--of this image make me want to dig my fingers into the midst of them. I find the textures of the coins really fascinating and inviting.
Of course, texture is all about light and how it bounces off different surfaces, as she very well demonstrates here. The light is absorbed by the grass stalks, giving them a slight glow, yet bounces off the trailer. The barn seems to eat it for lunch. All in all though, the textures found in her image--manifest by light--give the photo interest. Once again, her limited color pallette reemphasize these textures even further.
Her very first DPC image, 'Moss and Glass', show her natural tendency, as a part of her style, to emphasize the contrasts of textures she sees around her.
Even this image, which seems to be based in color, would not be nearly as interesting if we could not see the texture of her lovely hands.
Since texture is made manifest by light, it is easy to see why she has a natural affinity for capturing good light--especially its use in angles--in her photos.
I encourage you to look at more of her stuff, and to look at other photos, including yours, to see how texture works. It is not so silent a photographic element, and Pam is the Temptress of Texture!
I'd like to know what photos of Frisca's you like best.
I'd also like to know what photos you like that display a good use of texture. (Yeah, I'm playing professor again and giving out homework!). |

Yeah Frisca! I'm glad to read this profile, because it reminds me how much I love your "With Bells On" shot, which I added to my favorites. A well-deserved profile, I'm sure Pam's headed for a ribbon in the very near future.

Nice work. I have one that I really like...
This tells more in one picture than you could write in a full page column!
Great choice to profile!

Oh...*end tackle*
I guess I like best of Pam's the Basilique de Notre Dame. I was there when she shot it and I took 80 of my own and this is still the best one we have between us.
Of course, I like all of her stuff. I don't know how I feel about her tempting texture, but as long as I'm not neglected, I can't complain!
Pam has a natural feel for this. It's my hobby - she picked it up to spend more time with me. I'm HAPPY for her progress so far - she beats me pretty much every other challenge!
Congrats again, b. You definitely have been studying enough, learning enough and trying hard enough!

She knows about her profiling, but she won't see it probably until tomorrow. She's on a little minivacation right now. (Though prone to sneak on!)

ohmygod! I feel like I've won an academy award! I am actually not even at home, but when I was talking to mav last night, through the cut out of my cell phone, he told me that david profiled me. I'm sure he had to repeat himself several times before I understood! I was floored. I haven't even approached a ribbon, but I hope to sneak up on one soon. I think my take on challenges is too subjective, and not as well executed as I'd like (lighting being my main problem.. I can't control it, so usually just wait for the sun to be most advantageous and then use that!)
I learn so much from the other photographers on this site, and with the help of david's profiles of some of the great ones, we are taught so much more.. I'm glad if I can give a little back to the pot o' knowledge.
Now that I've already got my "Sidwell" I hope to shoot for a ribbon, just so I can feel that high too!
Seriously, I thought I was utterly under the dpc radar, its amazing and delightful to know that me and my humble work does get noticed. Thanks to everyone and anyone who's taken some time to look at my work and the work of anyone else who's shoot under the ribbon radar!

P you are actually in my top 50 photographers for scoring. And considering its annomy, thats pretty good. :) (well i guessed your self portrait). I have known you longer than post people here, and although we have not talked much in the last year, you are a very good photographer. I remember the first time you showed photos on mmw, and i was blown away by your macro work with butterflies and things :)

As you've perhaps noticed, I don't really look at how many ribbons one has when I profile them I was just looking at your "Come Together" shot, Pam, and thought--she's got some great stuff, and she has a natural affinity for noticing and bringing out texture. So you made a good choice.
Congrats on the "Sidwell" LOL!

Yeah, way to go Pam!!! Your photos and scores are very consistant. And I bet not many people can say that absolutely every photo they have entered has been taken at least once as a favourite by someone.
Keep up the good work.

Another great choice, and another great tagline : )
Frisca's is a profile I haven't visited in a while so it was good to catch up. That Notre Dame shot really is da bomb innit?
Strangely for me - I'm not that much of a people shot person - I really like this shot. Dunno why, I just do.
'grats Pam - now go get that ribbon : )
