Urg, the voters aren't understanding my entry and I've two things in my empty room. I'm at 5.1 now but I think I will drop down to about 4.5 |

It seems as though I've got more comments than most, but a lesser score than all.

This is the first challenge in sometime that I did not discuss my score, and I am doing WAY better than I thought!
Therefore, I will not be doing score sharing this go around! :)

I rather liked my shot when I entered it. It seems I may have been the only one. hehe.
As an aside, I have to say that I thought this challenge had a much lower quality shot than usual. I seem to remember a thread where this possibility was voiced by several people because of the nature of the challenge and the high probability of DNMC viewpoints. For what it's worth, I think that opinion is right. The relatively low entry volume suggests that people were afraid or uninterested in this challenge.

Depressing how many people think of a person as a "thing." IMHO, that is a clear DNMC.
The quality of the shots in this challenge is lower than I expected, though there are some clear winners. |

Clear to you, maybe, but I'd have to disagree. (Note: I don't have an entry this challenge.)

I also don't see people or animals as things. Everyone has a right to their own opinion but I would take offense at being classified as a thing. I think personally people don't meet the challenge. Some really nice shots of people in empty rooms but IMO I can't see scoring them high when they so obviously do not meet the challenge. People are usually more interesting than some of the other "single things" in the pictures so I think it is an unfair advantage to score the people picture higher when they veered from what I believe the intent of the challenge was. I think if it were to include people or animals it would have said so. which it clearly did not. |

The possibility of a person/animal taking offense to be classified as a 'thing' is definitely not 'obviously' not meeting the challenge. You could also say that the people who manufactured a chair, for instance, and put hours of sweat and work into making it would take offense to people calling their chair a 'thing'. |

I viewed "thing" in the generic sense, like an item or a subject. I think my score is suffering as a result. To me the bigger question is, what constitutes "one" thing. The entries are all over the map on that issue.
As I said before, I didn't count off for having more than one item in the shot, but I bumbed scores that did have just one item.
I think there are some very strong images despite the low turnout. It is a very tough challenge.

You could say that people who manufactured a chair would take offense to people calling their chair a thing. If they did I would call it whatever they liked "Sir" Rachel, Bob, whatever but I am sorry to me it is still just a thing. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I was stating mine, I am not a thing. |

By the way, hope I am not offending anyone who did take a picture of a chair! :) |

AJ just beat me. You've never heard someone refered to as a thing in the "You poor thing." sense?
Here is the definition at dictionary.com. At least the first 3 definitions.
An entity, an idea, or a quality perceived, known, or thought to have its own existence.
The real or concrete substance of an entity.
An entity existing in space and time.
An inanimate object.
Something referred to by a word, a symbol, a sign, or an idea; a referent.
A creature: the poor little thing.
I'm afraid that anybody who does not count a person as a "thing" is involving personal bias. Yes, it's your right, but if you were to have the argument with a word expert, I'm afraid you'd lose.

Not everyone brings along a philologist when interpreting the challenge description. :) Despite how unpalatable it is, the narrowest, most obvious interpretation will always be the safest. |

I concede Dr. Achoo, you must be correct as a creature I have often been called a "poor thing" and at work I am often an inanimate object. So having seen your explanation I give up and promise not to have an opinion again, (fingers crossed).
But in all ernest I will put deep thought into what you have so eloquently put.

Haha, methinks thou dost protest too loudly! ;) Remember, you can judge any way you want. The voter is always right. This just goes back to my original issues with the challenge (of which I had many).

How can the voter always be right when you get scores of 2 and 10 on the same image???????
Reminds of the song lyric that goes something like, "Two guys on the street proclaim to be Jesus, one of them must be wrong."
BTW DrAchoo, thanks for your comments on my EP entry. I really appreciated it!

I'm glad I skipped this challenge because I knew this would be a DNMC Nazis stronghold. I'm here for the photography not the word games. Maybe it's time for a revolt before the Nazis take over more of DPC? Good grief. |
