Original pic
My try at photoshopping them
the lettering I was thinking of using (on black BG of course)

Any comments, criticism or critiques on my photo or PS job?

Any suggestions for layout, positioning, etc for the card? The flowers don't necessarily have to be next to each other like that or anything.

I also want to put, Amanda and David Brimm, phone number, website address (when we make one that is), and a short list of types of photography

Thanks for any help

P.S. I know it's cliche to use flowers, but I think that there's a reason they are used so much, I also like the black background

Gosh, I saw that and did a double take.

I like yours better because it is less busy with just the two blooms. I think I like the one prior to PS - just for the coloration alone.

How about something like this??...

yeah, I was thinking it was a little too much... so you like the color of the original better, but what do you think about the brightness of the PS'd one?

What would you recommend doing to the original?

Thank you Judy for responding

cool Becky, thanx

so I take it you like the original better also?
06/04/2006 11:20:14 PM · #6
I just like the original...something about the light. I looked at them both side by side and the other one looked processed. Just liked the orig better.

But what did you think about the layout??
06/04/2006 11:22:33 PM · #7
Oh..and one more thing..Premiere ends in ''e''.
06/04/2006 11:25:26 PM · #8
a question? what kind of photography do you plan on doing?
06/04/2006 11:32:10 PM · #9
yeah, I guess it would help to spell it correctly, sloppy on my part.

here is a less dramatic PS job:

Is this better than the other photoshopped one? is the original still better?

and we do weddings, stock, fine art, studio, portraits, and etc. - a shotgun approach I guess you could say... me and dave are going to have different cards and target a little differently from each other too
06/05/2006 12:30:55 AM · #10
ok, well, from going back and forth back and forth between them, I guess I like the pic straight from the camera, wow, not used to that... guess there's nothing I need to do to it...

also, I like the spelling of premiere better than w/o the e

but:

premier: first in rank or performance: CHIEF, or first in time: EARLIEST

premiere: a first performance, to give or receive a first public performance

so I don't think I want the meaning of the second one... hmm, too bad, it's spelled prettier, but do you think people would really notice?

what do you guys think of this?

should I do something with that space between the last two lines?

what do you think of the color of the text? size, spacing, etc?

I would format everything on the left margin. Switch the 2nd and third lines. Then have your names even centered between the 2nd and 4th lines.

Just my 2 cents worth. Nice job on the picture.

Something like that. Aligned on the left. With some space between lines 2 and 4.

like this?

Getting there I think :) In my opinion the text is too bright and stands out too much. Also I'm not keen on the pink tint to the text... If you want I'll see what I can come up with based on your one so far? :)

The layout looks great. Maybe go an all out pink on the text. Match the color of the flower. Give that a try. What do others think?

Well, I tried white and maybe it's just my eyesight, but bright white on black gives me that weird straining feeling where the edges of the text seem to blur together with the letters beside it and has that pulsating feeling to it... kind of like the optical illusion posters you see...

I didn't want to go too pink, I will try it and see, I just automatically thought it would be too much and ruin the calm pretty effect, but maybe not. I selected the pink from the inside of the bottom flower, but I'm going to check now and see.

Originally, you can see, I wanted a silver, but that looked bad, and then I tried gray, but meh, it didn't look so good either...

I would love if you would take the time to mess with it, all of your guys' input is much appreciated!

Thank you all so much for your patience and your help!! Couldn't do it as well without you guys

Here is the next version:

a little darker pink and also, Jutilda suggested spacing the names out somewhat like this.

Better?

oops, how about w/o dot in contact info and flowers moved up a bit

hahahaa.... this is becoming quite amusing to me, hope I am not wearing you all out

I very much dislike that typeface, Zapf Chancery or a clone of it I think. It's been overused to death. Here's another approach, using a font called "Papyrus". It takes a different tack on the dynamics of the card...

nobody likes a simple, plain namecard anymore these days? :)
here's my attempt at something so simple - it captures the attention.

hmm.. yes, papyrus is my favorite font, but I don't have it in my version of PS, I like your layout too, the only thing is that it brings me back to that negative space issue between the names and the photography types.... feels uneven to me somehow, but anyhow, yeah the font I used was monotype corsiva, the only nice font it seems was in there. I will have to download PS fonts from Dave I suppose, thank you Robert, I value your input a lot and I think you have broken me out of the little rut I was in. I will mess with it tomorrow, because it is 1:30am, I'm having a hard time getting to sleep and I have another long boring day of summer school bright and early tomorrow morning, Please keep this pic up for a bit, so I can look at it more when I come back to it tommorrow.

as for crayon's card, it's cute, :) but I like the novelty of having a photo that I took on the card, kinda looks like a postcard actually, but that might just be how tired I am.

Yes, Papyrus ins much better, but wouldn't let the type go across the flowers. Still would go for left margin adjustment.

I think Papyrus is even more overused than Zaph :P
Here's my attempt:

I don't have any fancy fonts, but in this case I don't think it's a bad thing. I think the font here (Bitstream Vera Serif) looks clean and professional, and suits the stylishness of the image. I think scripty or gimicky fonts (Papyrus) fonts on business cards look very tacky. A simple serif or sans font can give a much better impressions.

I've chosen a colour that compliments the flowers, without being too similar that it makes the whole card monotone. It also isn't too bright so doesn't take the attention away from the nice photo. I've used some variencies in lightness to add interest and create a "flow" that people reading it can follow. I've made the contact info darker, because that's not what's immediately important. You want people to focus on the name, photo, and what you do, so they are the bright bits to draw peoples eye. If they are interested, they can see the contact details later. Web addresses and phone numbers aren't pretty so you don't want it to be the first thing people see. It's quite a large size however, to make sure people can read it correctly, otherwise they won't be able to get in contact even if they want to :P

I have a lot of empty space, but again I think it compliments the photo, and the text layout almost mirrors the photo in a way. I think this uniformity is important in tying together all the elements and keeping a professional edge. The empty space also adds a touch of class in my opinion.

Okay I think thats all my explaining done, let me know what you think :)
