What are the acceptable methods for converting from colour to b&w in a basic edit?
Using LAB lightness to grayscale?
Calculations to grayscale?( can you play with opacity here..?)
are there ones that you can't use?

Most color-shifting operations are legal in Basic. A lot of people make an Adjustment Layer using the Channel Mixer, checking the Monochrome option and then mixing the channels to optimum effect.

Lately, I've been copying just the Green Channel to a new grayscale document and starting my adjustments from there. Mostly though, I just use the mode conversion to Grayscale ...

so using calculations (creating new channel) before converting to grayscale is ok?
