One of the things that I have noticed the most about my move to digital is the inequity of the viewing of the image. This may seem like a strange thing to say but while it is now possible for many, many more people to share pictures, they are not necessarily "seeing" the same image.
With a printed picture there was typically only one copy so everyone got to see the same physical thing, flaws and all. With digital, the very divergence of monitors and other "view ports" by which the image can be seen ensures that the image is rendered differently on every viewer. The exception here is calibrated monitors, but even here there may be exceptions.
So when entering a DP Challenge my image - as is every other entrants - is subject to a whole gamut of different visual renditions and therefore interpretations.
I am sure that this point has been made many times before but having viewed one of my entries across four different monitors - laptop, LCD and iMac - I have only just realised how different the same image was rendered on each.
Just a late night philosophical observation after a long day in the garden - probably too much sun!

yeah, I calibrate my monitor and still get comments about the color of my pictures being off, and I wonder if their monitors are calibrated or if all of a sudden, my calibration is off again so soon and that I need to do it again or something... frustrating sometimes, makes you cautious to do too much PSing in case your computer is off a little
also, resolution too, I use my nearly 20" laptop screen at 1920x1200 (32bit) and then when I look at DPC on my mom's tiny low rez uncalibrated desk computer, a lot different...
I see what you mean, something to be said about prints |

Our system may not be perfect, but imagine how long it would take to send all the prints to everyone for voting! |

Chuckle - prints would be impossible, although a colleague of mine said why not print it and then scan it in... he was nearly lynched!
But we have what we have - and there are far many more positives than negatives.
