I have been using the same method making my pictures smaller but now it is not working anymore?? They always end up 98-120kb... 2weeks ago it worked, following the steps in the tutorials, but not any more. It seems that if I make RAW pictures untouched smaller, sometimes they end up 150k, but JPG do not... and the RAW pictures sometimes end up smaller or bigger.... can someone help me, please :o)

What software?

If PS, are you using 'Save for Web'? There's an option there for optimizing to file size.

yes I am using PS and follow the steps, 1.save for web 2.optimize file size to 150kb 3. quality 60 4. confirm the picture is 640pix... but then I save it and it usually turns out the wrong size??

In Save For Web, there's a little teensy arrow button up by the quality field where you can input your desired file size and it finds the right quality percentage for you. Don't pick a number yourself.

Just use save for web set to high, you'll always come inside of the 150k limit.

ok, but I think I have tried it.... don´t really know what I am doing wrong, but if I don´t put any number in there and it goes up to a higher number than 60, is that ok? Does the size of the picture "before" matter?

Why change the quality to 60? The optimize for file size will set the appropriate quality to keep the file size under what you set.

Image size needs to be confirmed at 640 on the longest side before doing the optimize for file size.

Maximum = 100
Very High = 80
High = 60
Medium = 30
Low = 10

Yes, the higher that number is, the better your quality is. The only requirement is that the file size be 150KB or under. Personally, I get grumpy if I have to save at a number under 80%. ;-)

Drop step #3 and switch steps 2 and 4. You basically end up undoing the automatic parts doing it the way you list.

I think I saw that in the tutorial section, image quality not above 60... but I am not sure, have gone through it so many times :o) Always at the last moment (as it will probably be this time)..

But I will try these tips tonight in saving for the next challenge, will see what happens... Thanks everyone...

It depends on each photo and the amount of detail it has in it.

Some photos with large areas of one color, or with large amount of blur, will need way less compression (i.e. higher quality number) than others.

PS tries to get as close as possible to the 150KB, and even if it did it at 95% (e.g. for a black and white photo), it still is 150KB or less.

Ok, it worked last night :o) but now I was uploading a picture of a glass of water and it does not go abv 50 or 60kb??? Maby it is enough because of the single color?? Tried to follow all the steps you gave me, WHAT am I doing wrong?
06/05/2006 07:53:29 AM · #16
Nothing :) Because the photo is all one colour with not much detail, it doesnt need the 150kb to be perfect quality :)

Aha :o) thanks alot... So the colors matter here..
