NAV keeps catching Trojans on my machine. I'm running Zone Alarm now as my firewall and it has slowed them down, but some are still getting through.
I usually look at them on Symantics website and the one thing they seem to have in common is that they are coming in through port 25. Is there anyway I can secure that hole?
I'm running WinXP SP2 fully updated.

| port 25 is the SMTP port (outgoing mail) switch from norton to AVG Anti Virus its free and I think better than Norton. |

I don't use SMTP for e-mail anymore. I only use Yahoo mail. Is there a way I can shut down port 25 for good?
Perviously I had been running Thunderbird for e-mail, but closed all my SMTP based acccounts and uninstalled Thunderbird. Could it have left the hole?

| I concur with wazoo. When I used Norton I would often get little sneaky viruses coming through. Since I switched to AVG I have never had a single one. I use the freebie version. That was the first thing I loaded on the new laptop today - and deleted the Norton that comes loaded on it - promptly followed by deleting any referrences to AOHell (I wish they would stop trying to force that crap on all of us) |

| you should be able to block all activity on port 25 through Zone Alarm. |

Are you running a e-mail virus checker as well? I run Zone Alarm for my firewall, but I run Norton for my virus checker and also e-mail virus checker. I get about 2 or 3 e-mail's a day that have one of the tojans attached to it, which Norton deletes. I have it set to delete anything with a virus. I don't care to clean anything that comes in infected, becuase 99.99% of the time it's not something I want anyway. So I nuke them.
There are a lot of infected spam messages coming across the internet. It's a constant battle and anyone that doesn't have their computer protected with a firewall AND good virus protection, running both real time protection and e-mail protection, is going to get zapped... and they might not even know it until after they have sent out infected e-mail or files.
Also, make sure your computer has the latest Microsoft updates. The security ones do make a difference. And don't let any of those with Mac's tell you that they are safe... they aren't and have had their first documented virus not too long ago. It's not that the Mac is better, it's that the people that right this stuff are only now starting to look at the Mac software. That's what happens when you taunt them by saying your OS software is immune. They don't like that and will send out some viruses just to prove them wrong.

Are you using a wireless network? If so you can block port 25 in your router.

I'm sorry, but any program that is FREE is not going to be as good as one of the main ones. The next time a brand new virus comes out, see who has the blocks for it first... Norton, McAffee, PC'Cillian or one of those free programs. The freebies will always be behind the major players. Most of the time the major virus programs will already have updates before the minor ones even know about it. And don't use Panda. Panda is nortorious for false hits to make it seem like it's better than the rest. But it will tell you a plain text file is infected as well as other files that are not infected.
You get what you pay for and I'd rather pay for good protection than something is free. Although, if you absolutely don't have the money, then something free is better than nothing.

Before you panic many times system slowdowns are caused by NAV and Zone Alarm. They are two of the worst offenders when it comes to system slowdowns. They also behave very similar to a virus. Both programs are hard to remove and use a tremendous amount of system memory. I have used both programs in the past and paid for both. I regret it. You are paying a company to put their bloated anti-virus/firewall on your computer and use your system resources. Try Avast Anti-Virus for your virus and try enabling your hardware firewall through your cable/dsl modem router and run the Windows firewall. Avast is free for the home edition. Small memory footprint, boot time scan, restore, etc. Great program. Here is the link //www.avast.com/. |

I am running the Mcafee that came with the new dell on this comp.
Right beside it is the older one running Norton...that I faithfully keep updated. Even auto update.
I went to microsoft security center the other day and ran a beta program called LIVE.
LIVE
The new one with Mcafee had not one issue.
The Norton had 19 spyware and adware issues and several trojans.
My Norton is just about to expire. Needless to say, I will not be renewing.

I have had both Norton and McAfee, both of which I discarded, and not without great difficulties. I currently have AVG and have not had any problems with it at all, unlike Norton's. Would I consider going back to Norton's........not a chance. For what it's worth, the free version of AVG is quite good and one can upgrade to the full paid version.

Norton has repeatedly caught
Galopoper.A & Adclicker
Abwiz.F is also on the list.
& I had a particularly nasty infection of W32.Netsky.P that seems to have started this whole thing.
ETA: Both Windows and NAV are updated completely.

My question really is: Did Netsky leave a hole that is letting these things in. I appreciate that NAV is catching them, but I'd like to stop them at thier source. Never had an issue before netsky.

Have you done a full system scan or just let NAV catch it in real time? Some of these buggers change their name and hide in mysterious places. |
