Give benefit of doubt to friend....
....call hotel and ask about the payments...you will not have to pay CC if there is a dispute (call cc company)
...hotel will have to research and let cc company know what happened...
....this research may or may not vindicate the friend.

The clerk gave us the room keys and I paid my room with Credit Card immediatelly.
My friend made both reservations on-line.
I left first the counter ,my "friend" was still talking to the clerk.
Two days later I checked my Credit card transactions on-line and discovered two charges from the same hotel !!??
85 $ and 113$
I called the hotel on the phone and they don't see any errors.
I called the "friend" and and he said that he paid his room.

Tell him you need his receipt to refute the double charge by the hotel to you. Maybe no one is lying, could be a mistake. Pursue that way. |

Just call the credit card company and ''dispute'' the charges. They have to do all the leg work to find out who charged whom. It happens. It's fixable...
Don't lose a friend over this.
Good luck. |

losing a "friend" is maybe a good idea !
The night before in Escanaba Mi, he paid both rooms on his credit card,I saw the bill for my room was 47.99.
Next day I asked him "how much I owe you for the room?" - he told me " 65 Dollars " ! |
well thats a whole different story, although he may not have been screwing you over that time either. you may have seen a basic 47.99 charge but some hotels have outrageous taxes and room fees. sometimes even parking fees(ive seen them upwards of 20.00 a night). the total mayhave been 65.00. |

i would just call your credit card and tell them you gt falsely charged. they will reimburse you & do an investigation on their own. This way you dont have to be the bad guy.

Yes, but I don't believe that you can just call. You have to write a letter, at minimum. See your cardmember agreement for how to file a dispute. And as I know that you don't have that (neither do I), you can look it up online, even download a complaint form online.
I was able to get $800 back once this way... (for a plane ticket I never purchased)
good luck!

99% chance it is a hotel mistake. I've seen this happen surprisingly frequently. Hotels seem to have problems when multiple rooms are reserved simultaneously. Whoever flashes a credit card first seems to get stuck with the entire bill!

Call and tell them what happened...they will send you the form. Fill it out and send it back....I've done it several times for bogus internet charges...

So why not tell your friend, "Sheesh, you paid TOO? They charged ME for both rooms. I need a copy of your CC bill so I can show the hotel both copies and we can get this straightened out. They seem to have charged us twice!"

I work as a travel agent. Hotels are supposed to ask a guest from each room for a credit card at check in regardless of what was used to guarantee the room online or over the phone. However, frequently, they neglect to do so and just put the charges on the credit card used to book the room. My educated guess would be that this is a hotel mistake. I would get a copy of your friends bill and call the hotel and speak to their accounting department. Even if your friends charges did end up on your credit card, they can move the charges on to their card and off of yours. And I also agree with previous posts about disputing it with your credit card company - sometimes the hotels take their sweet time in adjusting charges! |

My question is why the two amounts were different?

One room was double occupancy, the other was single. Most hotels are like that. |

we used an online company to book a couple nights in a four star hotel a couple months ago; I paid in advance;$115US/night. when I got the bill at the hotel; they charged me the full rate; ($265.00 plus- but they took it off when I noticed, and they were ever so polite afterward.
Sneakiness with faux inattentiveness, sorry and excuses equals increased hotel profits sometimes I guess.

Online booking can be tricky. Sometimes the room is paid at the time of the booking and other times it is just a reservation. I've had both happen to me. Hotel clerks for the most part are overworked and under paid so they make mistakes. You need to talk to both parties to resolve this. I just got billed almost $25 dollars per room per night for taxes and fees for hotels in NY so maybe the $17 is the difference in the amount you saw and what your friend asked you for is just this. I seperate friendship and business. In other words I ask for receipts etc.

I think the answer is simple. Tell your friend you think there was an error and ask if he/she can give you a copy of the credit card bill where it shows. They can black out all non-pertinent information. You are going to need this anyway if there is an error.
Either your friend produces it, at which point you move to step 2 which is to point it out to the hotel, or your friend doesn't, at which point I would be more suspicious there was no payment.
PS: It's entirely possible your friend THINKS he/she paid, when they didn't in reality. Could be simple error on their part.

Ask the hotel what two room numbers you were charged for, then pursue the double billing with the hotel for the room you were not in. Tell them the situation and ask if it possible that one room got charged twice. Based on that decide what to do next.
