I have to say that I have been totally inspired by "desolate" by DAVID428. That image is simply amazing. viewing this image I had an epiphany. I have been doing these church directory photos for my friend's church. I have hated almost every minute of it. The kids are hard to control and the organization invloved is a little overwhelming. I don't feel creative about it at all (they want standard head shots with the EXACT SAME lighting and backdrop for every image. wait... I'm meandering...

the point is I don't have any fun doing this... except when the older people come up. The elderly gent with the cranky disposition, who refuses to smile, but still looks stately in his picture. The old lady who insists on not looking at the camera... she thinks it looks more mysterious. There is just so much strength in such a frail body. I find them fascinating and actually have fun trying to capture them.

Now seeing "desolate" it occurs to me that this kind of work can be fine art. An avenue that I desperatly want to explore. But how do I find models? I mean I can't just go to a random old folks home and start taking pictures. I don't have any money to pay people. Do I take out an ad? I don't know where to start. Anyone know elderly in Oklahoma? (I know THAT one was a long shot) any suggestions?

you want older people? don't think I can help you there, but I do know that there is always an abundance of young, mostly female, people out there trying to be models, and a lot of them are very happy to exchange portfolio work for cheap to free...

Offer a free portrait session and include prints cheap, or at cost?

hmmm... like in "gigs" under "talent"? doesn't seem like something older people would look at. or am I just missing the boat on what section to put it in?

why wouldn't you just volunteer at your local nursery home. I'm sure they do newsletters or bulletin board like that. Offer some prints.

hmmm.... yeah, but I want to do darker stuff than the JC penney's head shot if you know what I mean. I don't want to be the creepy guy who volunteers at the old folks home.

young female models are easy to find. What you are looking for is quite the opposite.

As suggested earlier volunteering at a retirement home might be a good idea. Other than that, I really can't think of where you would find "models" for this.

You could start hanging out at VFW clubs, I suppose.

You say you can't go to a random old folks home and take pictures... but I say, maybe you can. Take along a copy of "desolate" and the church photos you did enjoy taking, tell them you'd like to take some photos of the residents and see what happens. Some of the residents get few or no visitors, so they might be quite flattered/excited to get someone who's interested in talking to them for a bit and taking some photos.

Bars, colleges, myspace, strip clubs... the list goes on. LOL My estimate is that 1 in 5 18-25 y/o woman wants to model (that's not nude, those numbers are a bit lower around 1 in 20 or so).

How? The same way you get tthem to date you. Make them feel confident and pretty and show interest in them. And, show them (with your portfolio) that you know what you are doing. oh, I guess it helps to have a camera tattoo on your arm.

Sorry ladies, if I sound sexist, but that's my experience. :-)

doesn't sound sexist, tell any girl how beautiful she is, and definitely yeah, she'll let you take pretty pics of her, chicks fall for that stuff. and I agree with the old folks home thing, take your portfolio and spend time with them... I used to volunteer my time at some of our local homes, and they are always so happy to tell you their life's stories and have you there spending time with them

Your best friend could get married to an aspiring one...

I've also gone to the VFW. Old people are great to photograph. I spent more time talking than shooting, so it has a "down" side.

Hey Amanda, have I told you how pretty you look today? Have you ever considered modeling? You see, I'm a photographer, and I want to...

Okay, I felt creepy just writing that. :o)

hahaha... lol

The other day, me and Dave stopped at a 7-11 and I ran in to get something to drink and I saw this guy standing outside waiting, and then this girl pulled up in her (probably daddy's) car, gave me this weird feeling and I was right! When I got back to the car, Dave said he knew the guy and that he was this skeevy old man who took soft porn pix of girls "for free" for their modeling portfolios, right., man, if I had known my gut instinct was correct, (as he was telling her he needed a parent's signature modeling release for the kind of photography he does, cuz she wasn't 18 yet) I would have gone over and ruined it for him, what a creep! I wonder if her parents did sign it or not, as that's where they were headed then, she was so eager, "yes, yes my parents would sign that, no problem, bla bla bla...." gross, it should be illegal to not tell people what you plan to do with the photos, well, I'm sure that somewhere it probably is somehow, but not good enough

sorry about the highjack

If she wasn't 18, her parent's signature on a model release isn't going to save him from a legal standpoint if he is shooting soft-core porn. ANY porn involving a minor is illegal, whether the parents sign off on it or not. I'm not a lawyer, mind you, but I'm reasonably sure I'm right on that one...

Drake, this is Sean from Metro Camera Club. Give me a call and we'll put our heads together on this one in Okc. I'd love to do this too.

You are very correct. And, one day that under-age model will be an undercover FBI informant. Or, at least we can hope.

Edit to add: *hint hint @ amanda*

I second that . Someone should involve the authorities.

well, it is my understanding that by soft core, I mean really soft core to where it's not illegal, because that was my first thought, get his license plate and call the police... but I guess he doesn't do actual nudity, just really close, pushing the boundaries you know

There are a lot of older people that do acting, dancing, modeling, etc. Check with any of your local theater or art groups to see if you can put up a notice that you are looking for people for the type of work you want to do. Most bigger cities have a weekly section in their paper that covers the art and entertainment scene. You can put a ad in them or at the least they will let you know what plays and other live performances are going on. Some of these are done by volunteers or people just breaking into theater and may be willing to do some TFP with you in exchange for stuff for them.

Another place you might leave a ad up is at golf courses and other places where retired and older people hang out (do they call it hanging out? :D). I think if you find the places to put up your notices, you will be surprised at how many calls you get.

If going to retirement homes makes you feel creepy, you can always go ask the Wal-Mart door greeters... although most of them seem way to happy for what you want to do. ;)
