I am on vacation and brought my speedlite 420 with me. I have not used it much since its purchase but lately I have been having one big problem. It seems that the flash is firing just before the shutter opens thus giving me no usable flash for the shot. The flash definitley fires but it fires too quick. Playing around with it this evening it started firing correctly (I have no clue what I did to make it happen) but after about 10 shots it reverted to firing early again. I am on vacation and didnt bring the booklet so I am not able to troubleshoot it from the manual and I dont really have alot of computer time to google research it. I just thought I would throw thi sout to the community in hopes that someone may have a quick solution for me.

Other possible pertinent info - with the flash on and ready - shutter speed 1/60, aperture 7.0, ISO 400. I know its firing early and not late since I tried a long shutter speed to test and still didnt get any light on pic.

Any help would be greatly apprecaited. I missed a ton of shots at my sisters wedding this Sunday because of the problems and had to revert to the on camera flash - so I expect alot of post processing work to have anything keepable.

There's not a lot you can do to a 420ex besides set slave mode and set high speed sync. Make sure all your connectors are clean and your batteries are charged.

The flash should go off twice for E-TTL, once to meter and once for the picture. Try using Flash Exposure Lock (the * button--the one you use for exposure lock). The flash should go off once when you hit the *, and again when you fully depress the shutter button.
