I currently built a custom computer for a customer. I am using an 80GB Maxtor Hard Drive. I installed Windows XP with Service Pack 2 on it, but when it gets to the screen where it says, "This part of setup is complete, your computer will reboot in 15 seconds." pops up, that's as far as I get. When the computer reboots, it says, "A disk read error has occured, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to restart.
I have switched the IDE Cables around to no avail. I have changed the BIOS to no avail. Please help me!!! Thanks J |

Was it a used drive and did you format when you installed? It sounds like you might have a bad sector on the hard drive and it's hitting a boot file that is in that bad sector. If you don't have stuff on there that you need to save, you might try re-installing and do a format if you didn't last time. If you did, you might do a re-install but have it install to a different directory... if it installed into C:\WINDOWS put it in C:\WINNT or visa versa.
Also, I assume the computer has the resources to boot up XP. As in amount of memory. And your bios is set to boot from the harddrive and not just the CD.
