As Strike Pointed Up Cross-over cable, pick up at radioshack or bestbuy or the likes.
A hub or switch will work with straight through cables and are pretty cheap these days (if you go this route don't buy a hub get a switch).
Assuming we are talking Windows here.
Static IPs on both computers, ie. make one 10.1.1.1 other 10.1.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
If you are using your Home PC and it has static IP configuration WRITE DOWN all numbers associated with it. IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS Servers...
Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections
Have them both in the same WORKGROUP.
Start > right click My Computer choose Properties
Click Computer Name tab
Click on Change... button near bottom
Workgroup radio button checked make sure the Workgroup name is the same on both pewters.
Then you have to get sharing right on the both or the machine that you want to transfer files from.
Permissions are easier if you have the Same User/Password on both computers.

Using my specialized network diagramming software, I have sketched out my home network to help you visualize.
My Internet comes in via Cogeco cable to my basement, however, as of June 5th this will change to Bell because some asshat tech from Cogeco hung up on me, so I'm switching ISP.
Line comes in, goes to asshat cable modem, goes to wired-router. Wired router goes to basement PC and also to wireless-router. Wireless router serves wife & kids' playroom PC and my laptop.
I like the wireless as I can take a dump while scoring & commenting on photos at DPC.
:-D

"Use" is a bit vague ...
That could mean anything from sharing drives and Internet access to grid computing.

Whew...you are correct, I jumped on the cross-over cable thing too quickly, thinking just hooking two pewters together.
The correct answer would be build a home network.
Cable/DSL Modem > Router/Switch/AP > Pewters and stuff
In no time will you have a cute little network in place, like mine simplified below.
DSL Modem
---- Router/Switch/AP (DHCP, Secured Wireless)
--------WinDoze Server 2003 (Wired - Den - sorta work related)
--------My Game/Photo Desktop XPpro PC (Wired - Den)
--------Wife's Desktop XPpro PC (Wireless - Dining Room nook)
--------Windoze Media Center 2005 PC (Wired - Spare bedroom)
------------XBox 360 MC Extender (streaming Audio/Video to livingroom)
------------Media Center Extender (Wireless - bedroom TV)
--------My Work Laptop XPpro with lot's of Virtual PCs (Wireless - VPN)
--------Wife's Play Laptop (wireless got to get to MyPoints you know)
--------Xbox 360 connects to Xbox live (Wireless - Living Room)
Do we use them all? Well yup...
