I will be headed to the Smoky Mountains in a few weeks. Any suggestions for shooting the sunrise/sunset there?

Get up early!! Well before the sunrise and be ready... most of the more spectacular shots of the Smokies incorporate the early morning fog which is heavy in the valleys but burns off pretty fast. If Cades Cove is not on your list of places to visit- add it. It is beautiful all day but very popular and sometimes crowded. You will be visiting in a peak time of year so prepare for that.

Klingman's Dome, if it's not completely fogged in. If it is, there's a really good sunrise spot maybe 1/2 way up to Klingman Dome, (coming from Cherokee), it's on the left. There's a bunch of road work equipment behind the parking area, so it's not too hard to find. That's often a great spot.

Klingmans Dome is certainly a must (Sunrise and Sunset). Newfoundland Gap is another great spot for Surise. From the viewing area, the sun will come up over the mountains just to your left.

You can also get some great shots off of Airport Road (historic nature trail)I think it is which has the trail heads to Rainbow falls and Grotto falls.

You might also want to try the Gatlinburg bypass. There is a pull off near the top that will give you a good view of downtown Gatlinburg for Sunrise.

If you are able to hike a little bit, Grotto falls is very pretty.

Cades Cove offers a lot as well. Ample wild life and another trail with another good waterfall.

I have a few of these areas in my portfolio if you would like to look.

As was mentioned before you'll have to check out Clingman's Dome. There are photo ops for sunrise and sunset there. From the parking lot at Clingman's dome you can do a 2 mile hike to Andrew's Bald. Nice views of NC and Ga there.

Also do a Google search on Newfound Gap. Not much for sunrise but you should be able to capture a decent shot of the setting sun there.

If you want to shoot any waterfalls you'll have no trouble finding one. They're all over the place here. You can spend a week shooting falls in the park just off HWY 321 between Gatlinburg and Townsend (Cades Cove).

Good luck and have fun!

Foothills Parkway, right off of Rt.321 just east of Maryville, heading towards Townsend and the GSMNP. There are fantastic views on both side of the parkway...mountains on the left and valley on the right. It's been rather putrid and hazy lately, but hopefully things will clear a bit for your trip. If I may make one suggestion, please brings along proper footwear...if you fall off the side of one of the mountains we may never find you...you wouldn't believe what I have seen some people wearing...flip flops and mountains do not make good bedfellows. About Cades Cove...never go on the weekend if you can help it...the crowds can be a nightmare in hell. On Sunday mornings the Cove is closed to all automobile traffic till noon, but you can walk or bike the loop.

I took this a couple of weeks ago up on the parkway looking northwest over the valley...please feel free to ask any other questions, I live in the area.

sunrises are usually better than the sunsets
