who cares what happens. I'm here to have fun not win some stupid virtual ribbon. This site isn't just about competition but learning as well and you vocalizing a single minded opinion publicly in a forum isn't the best way to approach things. People will learn from there mistakes if thats what you'd call it and all I was suggesting was that you and everybody else open their minds to different interpretations. I probably won't enter but thats besides the point. Just open your mind a little. |

My God !!! I'm just stating how I will vote on this challenge and how I think others will vote. Although I've been here only a year, I feel I have some handle on what will make a DNMC entry!
With that said, you can enter a shot of a room cluttered with clothes, chairs, beds, cats, dogs, rats, mice, roaches and any other objects or creatures....I'm sure you'll "learn" something after that!

Heck, you guys are focusing on the part that's cut-and-dried, jejejeâ¢:
"Take one thing and your camera into an empty room and photograph it."
Define "one thing", please. Heck, define "thing", please. Is a person a "thing"? Is a vase with a single flower in it one "thing" or two "things"?
How about the concept of "take...into"? If the "thing" is already in the room, does it meet the challenge?
Also, note "one thing and your camera"; a tripod is assuredly a "thing", as is a remote release. Shall we toss out any shots obviously made with a tripod and a long exposure as violating the spirit of this description?
I find myself thinking of the comedian "playing to an empty room"; the room is "empty" because there is no audience, despite that it has chairs, tables, carpets and so forth in it.
The DNMC people can have a field day with this challenge if they are of a mind to, I swear...
Robt.

What if we take one thing OUT of a very crowded room and photograph it elsewhere? Will that work?
(Tongue FIRMLY planted in cheek. Oww.) |

"Your challenge this week" isn't even a sentence! Why isn't anyone complaining about that? |

I tend to agree with Rob on this one. A empty room does not mean it is void of fixtures as someone mentioned earlier.

I would agree and some good points have been made to that such as Bear's above reference to the comedian, but I think most voters won't feel that way.

We could be testing the "removal of minor distracting elements" rules with this one: it may be easier to digitally "empty" the room after taking the photo...

Oh, for SURE they won't... Or I'm pretty sure anyway... The whole post was vaguely sarcastic. There are, as usual, a gazillion possible interpretations and a gazillion voters who can (and probably will) shoot each one down. Give it your best, following your heart, and let the 10's fall where they may...

Yea I got the sarcasm:) but you do raise a good point as to if a person is a thing (or would be considered one in the eyes of most voters) |

Well, if I were not going to be vying for 3rd in the LoD, I would steer wide and clear of this challenge. Not every challenge topic can be a winner, I guess, but this one has disaster written all over it. A few thoughts:
1) Not everybody has an empty room. Decreases participation.
2) Not everybody has a wide enough lens. Decreases participation.
3) We are going to see 95% of the challenge be creatively challenged shots which all look the same. We will have 5% of the challenge be worth looking at.
4) DNMC is going to have a field day with letter of the law as well as intent. Empty corner? Close up? What about any artificial lighting? Does that count as a thing? (i.e. what about "things" behind the camera.
5) The winners will still be excellent shots. I haven't seen a challenge yet which didn't have at least 3 quality entries.
I will go on record here on Monday predicting 146 entries with roughly 12 shots above 6.0 (norm would be 25). I will also be the first to retract all this if DPC proves me wrong (they have before). Yes, my entry will be in there. With the way it's been going the last 5 challenges, it will be among the 95% that are creatively uninspired. |

*I* think it could bring some interesting results.
I'm crying because I found the PERFECT spot last week while on a "wander the backroads and see what we can find" day, was going to enter it in architecture but wasn't happy with the shots for that theme, couldn't find a way to shoehorn it into Beatles, but decided it was definitely a "revisit" with more lighting etc. It's just too far to revisit this soon unless I could come up with another reason for driving up there, which I can't :(

Would it be ok? of course. would it be cute? most likely. would it lose some votes I would say so. If you love the idea and can be ok with a posibly bad score I say do what you like. |

I didn't either. But then I remembered that I own a snowshowel - one of those big wide ones.
Now I have a room that is empty except the 'junk bank' on the back wall ;)
But seriously - how big might that item be? Can you for instance empty a room and bring in a sectional coach for the shoot? Technically that should not be DNMC |

You might just hop over to Heemstede LOL, I've a beautiful house with a large empty attick, 4 empty bedrooms, an empty bathroom, an empty dining and sitting room and even the kitchen is empty.
Just sold my late aunt's house (build in 1930, never have been changed since). I think I'll be there next Friday and Saturday.
