I'd really like to buy an ultra-compact camera with a folding lens (no extension when you switch on) to replace my ghastly Sony U10. What I've always liked about the Sony is that it's so easy to shoot from the hip without anyone even noticing that the camera is switched on. But it's only 1.3mp and the noise level is something ridiculous, so basically it's a useless camera.
What I'm looking for is something with about 6mp (maybe 5, but no less) with decent picture quality, so that I can also use it for stock photos if I see something decent while driving around and don't have time to get out a bigger camera. I've done this a few times with building sites with my Canon A80, but it's only 4mp and not quite as small as I would like,
I liked the look of the Pentax W10, and the camera feels okay, but the sample pictures don't look nearly sharp enough. The best I've come across in terms of picture quality in an ultracompact is Fuji F10, but the lens comes out quite a long way and I've read that the camera can switch on accidentally and lead to lens damage. Otherwise it looks pretty impressive and it the first non-SLR I've come across with high ISO that looks half usable. Though not quite what I'm looking for, it's tempting. Or maybe I should forget all about ultra-compact cameras for now and think about a dSLR in the near future.
Or maybe there's something out there that I've not read about yet. Any ideas?

Well I just got the Casio Z1000...it's awesome and it is extremely compact. Fits in my pocket with ease. The picture quality is great. The only regret is I wish I had got it in black. You should take a look at it...definitely one to consider.

I can't even find a review of that one yet. So I doubt it's available in South Africa right now.

That's actually one I was considering until I saw the picture quality of the Fuji. But it may be my best bet because of it's size. It has the advantage that it takes SD memory like my Panasonic. I'm getting tired of having to buy never memory for every camera I buy.

Our postal service is so bad, it would be a major risk. Anyway I'm not quite sure it's the camera for me. It doesn't have a flat lens, and if I compromise on that, I really like the look of the Fuji for its high ISO performance. I'm not going to rush into anything though; if I can't find the right camera, I'll make do with what I've got.
