I never thought about hiring a landscaper until I went out and got the mail today...

Did you ever wonder what people are thinking when they choose their business name?

edit to add: How this got in the Challenge Suggestion forum is beyond me. I must have been busy interviewing the new landscapers. :P If SC could move to General Discussion, I would appreciate. :)

What goes into a name?- - - Hiring a landscaper?

One of my businesses is landscaping. My company name is Tropical Plannedscapes. Let's hear the conjecture on what went into this name. It's an interesting story, but I want to hear what you think of it first.

Sorry, did I just hijack this thread? I can't see how this subject would ever have come up on this site any other way.

No worries. My original post had no real social value anyway.

Let's see... "Tropical Plannedscapes" - I like the latter part and if you specialize in Tropical lanscaping (I assume you do), then it's perfect. Well chosen. How's business?

Your reference reminded me of this little story:

I know some people feel that marriage as an institution is dying out, but I disagree. And the point was driven home to me rather forcefully not long ago by a letter I received which said: "Darling, I love you, and I cannot live without you. Marry me, or I will kill myself." Well, I was a little disturbed at that until I took another look at the envelope, and saw that it was addressed to occupant...

I originally started my landscaping company under the name "Green Giant Landscape Designs". I wanted to convey the message that we design and plan a landscape before installation. The point is that we don't do landscape maintenance like everybody else with a lawnmower in the back of their pickup truck. I, and my salesmen, are landscape designers. We do not do maintenance.

The name was approved and granted by the State of Florida and they said no problem, as long as all four words were my company name. But, Pilsbury Corporation (who owns the Green Giant vegetable company) said that they would sue me if I didn't stop using their name. I consulted with an attorney who said that I was not in the wrong, but the only party who would win this court battle would be him, because I was right, but it would cost me to fight it.

I changed the name to one that I invented to, again, convey what we do and something that was absolultely original.

Today, we are a landscape design and installation company that specializes in the design and installation of landscapes, ponds, and waterfalls. The pond and waterfall side of the business has taken off and is about 85% of our business.

Anyway, that is what went into the name. Something original, but still gets the point across. It's tough at first for some people to figure it out, unless they see it in print, and then it makes sense to them.
