I think it is only fare if I answer this question first.

I became a member so I could share my photos with other photographers, and get their opinions. I check out others work and motivate myself for better shots. I am here to enter the challenges and test my work.

So, what's your reason? Ribbons only? show off? Learn from others? teach to others? Socialize?

:)

I'm not a payed up member (yet), but I'll give you my reasons. I love taking photos. I may not be the worlds best... but everything takes time, and there's always someone who knows better in one field or another. It's great to get feedback, and occasionally even give it. I'll be a payed member next time I get payed... being a teacher just doesn't pay as well as it could :P.

I joined to try to become better. I hit a point where I was tired of taking pictures of my friends(so were they) and pets. The challenges make me think and give me good ideas of pictures to take. I've become better, slowly, so I'm happy.

I'd love to ribbon, email the picture to mom so she can put it on the refrigerator, but I'm not heart broken when it doesn't happen...she is :)

I got here before there was a paid membership. When paid memberships were introduced (starting in '03) I didn't think twice about signing up. I already saw the benefit to my photography from being here, and knew what a great group it was... it was a *much* smaller group then, though! Three years later, the same $25 buys a lot more features and benefits, making a great deal phenomenal.

I got a membership for the portfolio, and to learn more about advanced editing techniques.

I joined in order to be able to sell prints. I tried a challenge for fun and got hooked on getting honest feedback. It's the only place I've ever received honest, unbiased, anonymouns feedback. That was incredible.

Then, the desire to beat myself and learn more. And get a ribbon, and make it to the top 10, and beat 6.0 as often as possible, and get into the 5.'s for the first time, but in the reverse order. Each time I make a goal, I want that to be my new standard. What satisfied me, photographically, one year ago, leaves me cold now. What a place!

Becky

edit: never have put a print up for sale.

I joined, not because of the challenges, or the great photos that are on the site, but because of those people that are willing to help others by explaining how they accomplished the shots they did. Every question I've asked there have been those that have pointed me in the right direction, given examples, or answered my question out right. This alone, to me, was enough for me to support this site. Anything else I get from the site is just icing on the cake. One of these days I'll have the time to enter a challenge or two, but until then, I just enjoy the site and sharing where I can.

because challenges are filled with some kind of addictive substance yet to be identified by scientists.

I signed up because this place is filled with wonderfully talented photographers and I'd like to join their ranks someday. I love photography, but know that I can greatly improve over where I am right now. Being here gives me inspiration and I can also ask questions of those on here I admire. I will be a paid member here soon enough. :-)

At first I've been watching the photo's with open mouth ;)

after a while (± 2 months?) without posting in the forums & entering, there was the bubbles challenge, and I thought I could do that. yeah :P

after some challenges somebody gave me a gift membership (I am still very thankful, thank you!) and the addiction was there ;)

I enter challenges first to LEARN.
Sometimes there are challenges of things / subjects you would never photograph if you weren't participating. I like that :)

In the beginning, I came here as a way to ease my transition from film to digital. I became a member because the crowd here is awesome.

I became a member to improve and enhance my photo skills. I landed a job at the local paper and really needed an edge. I saw what people here were capable of and since I had absolutely no photo lessons I figured this would be a great place to start. I figured being a member would give me greater access and attention than being an "outsider" ( for lack of a better term). Since becoming a member I must say I have come leaps and bounds in my photo skills. I know I don't enter the challenges and my portfolio is still the same. But, I spend my time here studying what everbody here is doing and how they do it. I then apply what I can with the paper. Obviously I am doing something right because I spend a LOT of time shooting for the paper. My skills have a tremendous amount of room to grow so here I stay. I just think of how dangerous I would be when and if I ever do figure out all of this stuff. I seriously still have no clue what I am doing but with my eye, my heart and the enthusiasm I bring to the table it still keeps afloat. Thanks to the entire board for the instruction and tutiledge.

I'm here to watch my pictures crash and burn... ;-)

And to get really cool comments like the one I got from Art/Ken on my lens cap entry.

And to be motivated to go take pictures and try to make them better.

Mostly because it's fun!

I lack creativity. I needed more challenge choices to pick from because I lack creativity...LOL

I lurked for a long time before I became active on the site. I paid for a membership when I became active.

I am here for two reasons .. and one of them is really important ...

1. my lover was on this site .. and he takes great pictures .. so it was something we could do together (see saving a relationship is doing stuff together)

2. It was his sister that bought him here ... so I for once followed the leader.

When I choose to join it was to improve and stretch my skills ... I am used to art in words .. e.g. I used to write .. but now I am using art in pictures .. a new skill for my bow.

Kari

PS the crowd aint'bad here either

I came across this site when I was looking for good photographs to learn from. I would peruse hundreds of images during the evenings before I went to bed and try to figure out what made them good.

And then I happened upon DPC where you are told what makes them good or bad. I've learned tons here and I know I am only starting.
