One of my friends (JordanZ) showed me this processing technique. You take a daytime photo and add a black layer at 70-80% and "paint" in the light. Has anyone ever tried something like this and if you have, could you post some suggestions or steps on how to accomplish a photo like this? Of course this wouldn't be challenge legal, but it still seems to be a cool trick.

Tutorial.

Thanks, any help and/or advice would be great.

First link didn't work for me, the second tutorial worked fine -- thanks!

There are probably ways to do this involving adjustment (layers) only, since there's a way of exposing/processing film where they can make a movie shooting in daylight, but make it look as though the action is at night-time.

François Truffaut's film Day For Night (Best Foreign Film Oscar, 1974) is named for the technique, which is invloved in the plot.

Hmm...that's really weird, it was working just fine last night. And now the link I bookmarked doesn't work either. guess they took the page down.

At work, old school way of doing 'day for night' is using a black fabric called 'douvatein'. A cotton based, high heat fabric that does a nice job of stopping any light.

On the movie, 'The Client', the company rented this old house in Memphis, TN..

The grips sunk, and four cornered 40' telephone poles. Had some custome made douvatein shipped in from Hollywood, CA. Threw gromets on the fabric, added tie line, and a whole bunch of 3/4" hemp, and nails and actually made the house 'day for night' 24/7 until the shot was done. Pretty f...ing cool.

Sorry, just wanted to share.

Back to being invisable.
