I got a question? I wont mention what challenge, beings they are all advanced editing, or anything about the photo relevent.
The question is, I have a contrail that needs to be cloned out. It is a small thin contrail, I wouldn't even give it 2% of the whole photo, but is disturbing enough. Can I clone it out, and feel safe about not being DQ'd.
Thank you guys, and ya'll are a hell of a team, that does a hell of a job. Thanks for everything. |

IMO you can take that out. I feel the only way a contrail would be a major element would be if your shot was the statue of liberty and the contrail was going in one of her ears and out the other! ....and then it may even be legal to take it out.

It might not be that simple. A contrail, even a thin one, can be a significant part of a picture. SCalvert's rule-of-thumb (remembered from a thread long, long ago) was to ask how the average viewer would describe a photo. If your element (the contrail) receives any mention, it's probably a major element. So, for your photo, how would your wife describe it? Your mother, your mailman??

Well it is a distraction, or I wouldn't want to take it out. That much is obvious. If somebody asked me, it would be the first thing I seen, or even my wife probably, but simply because it is distracting. Like I said once before though, you could put at least 500, if not a thousand of these things on the photo and still have room. That would signify not even 1/500 of the photo, but I would even go further, and say it would be closer to 1/1000. |

I wouldn't think twice about it. Clone away. |

I'd think twice. The object's size or whether it's distracting isn't the determining factor. It's more a matter of how visually prominent the feature is. You could probably put 500 or 1000 of these bugs on DrAchoo's face, but it's still an important element. ;-)
Likewise, a small contrail in an otherwise-blank sky could be visually important. When in doubt, hit the Contact page and attach the image to a ticket for SC opinion.
