It was my 7 year old's first game of the season last night. I'm SO looking forward to it! She actually went after the ball instead of chasing bugs like she did most of the time last year.
And there's even more excitement, as my four year old is starting soccer this summer too, but her season doesn't start for a few weeks.

I have my 5 y/o boy signed up in AYSO, but their season doesn't start until the beginning of September. I can't wait! Last year was his first year and in one game he scored 12 goals, and I only played him half of the game. Of course, they don't have goalies defending the goal at that age. ;-) |

Is it mostly girls who play football in America?
Seems odd as it's the complete opposite in the UK.

At a young age, it's about 50/50...my daughter's 'team' is split right down the middle, gender wise. It does seem that as kids get older, they split off into other sports though.
For instance, I played soccer from the age of 5 until I was a senior in High School (18) - because my HS didn't have an American Football team. But I played baseball and basketball in college. Soccer, for me, was something to help my fitness and footwork to prepare for the basketball season.
My wife, on the other hand, played from the age of 5 and into college (scholarship). She was awesome.
I was the nastiest striker you've ever seen.
