I will be going on a trip to the Smoky Mountains in the next few weeks and I am looking for some filter reccomendations. I have the following lenses:

18-70mm

28-200mm

12-24mm

170-500mm

Any suggestions on which ones I should get filters for and what types, brands, etc. I have never really played with filters except for UV and I am looking for any advice.

Thanks,

RP

Definetly a circular polarizer. Buy one that fits your largest lens and then just by step up rings to make it fit your smaller lenses. This way you don't spend a ton of money on the same filter for all different sizes.

grab a ND graduated filter. Perfect for sunset shots where you want the sun included in the image ;)

I suggest using Cokin P filters ;)

I'm going to the Smokey Mountains also, in about a week and a half.

I expect to get some pics of waterfalls, so I'll be getting some neutral density filters so that I can use longer shutter speeds even if its a bright, sunny day.

I just ordered a Lee filter holder and various adapter rings from Adorama and will be ordering some graduated neutral density filters. I might also consider some sort of filters that fit this system for the purpose of tinting the images for sunset shots over the mountains.

BTW, when are you going?

Yakatme,

I am going with the Popular Photo Magazine trip. I will be there June 8th-11th.

don't know how often ya'll come to the smokies, but not real sure why sunsets would be that big a draw. . . they normally aren't real spectacular, especially this time of year, unless you can get up really high (Parkway or higher). Good luck though. :)

Don't know that you need special filters for the trip, UV, CP, and ND will probably suffice ...

Where are you going to be?

We are staying in Gatlinburg - doing sunrise and sunset from Clingmans Dome. Doing the Cades Cove stuff and then various waterfalls, eventually venturing over to the NC portion.

What a timely post as I will be there next week. My husband is originally from TN, but I've never been. Excited!

Tinky2 - I think you will enjoy it. I am from the Memphis area - but Gatlinburg is about 8 hours away.

I'm leaving on a road trip on June 2nd and returning on June 11. I expect to be in the Smokies, Nantahala River area, Gatlinburg, and Cherokee from the 6th through the 9th or so.

I've got to do one of those sponsored/guided learning trips sometime though. Sounds like a great time.

Clingman's Dome should be good. Sunrise will probably be better than set. If it is clear (not likely, lots of pollution that high up, so it usually looks hazy), you can see around 100 miles. Hazy, I think it is in the neighborhood of *only* 22.

In Cades Cove, if you can walk, you will get better shots (it is an 11 mile loop). For that, your 170 - 500 will be great to get some fo the deer that hang out in the middle fo the fields. Lots of coyotes, too.

the waterfalls are always good bets.

I, personally, think the NC side is coolest. Stay away from the Harrah's in Cherokee, though. It's a rip. ;P

The Natahala Gorge area will afford you some awesome shots of kayakers, rafters, etc. if you aren't afraid to get your feet a bit wet. :)

I disagree with the statement about Harrah's. I enjoy aking my donation every time I am up there. The rip off is that there is no alcohol inside. Do they know how much more I'd be willing to lose if I were tanked?!?
