i have a Rebel XT, do i need to download a program to convert from raw?, or does it come with the camera?

You should have gotten a copy of Digital Photo Pro with the camera. That is the software you would use for conversion.

| Or a copy of FileViewerUtility. It works with RAW images, that's all I got with my Rebel. |

yep you can use that and it will work its kind of slow though.....
and if you have photoshop cs or earlier versions it wont open our XT raw files so you have to download Adobe DNG converter than photoshop will open it like any regurlar Raw file.

How about RawShooter essentials, they have a free version which does a great job, its a download

Canon's DPP is free i fyou don't have it - go to canon usa's website and look for the 1D line of cameras and the software/download bit and download the DPP 'updater'.

I have dabbled in RAW but never really learned it well. Now I want to get a little bit more serious. I use PaintShopPro, not Photoshop. I have available Canon's Digital Photo Pro v.2.1 and Pixmantec's RawShooter Essentials 2006 v.1.2. Which do you think would be the best choice to put my learning effort into? I'd appreciate it if anyone who has used both could compare these two.

That sounds like a pretty expensive front-end to //www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/ (//www.frostyplace.com/dcraw/ is a free one, probably fewer bells and whistles).

I feel that Rawshooter Essentials is far better than DPP, simply for the amount of adjustment options one has. I particularly liked the shadow contrast and highlight contrast sliders and the speed of it all. Very easy to use and get pictures looking how you want them to be. Please note that I've only got DPP 2.0.3 on a mac and can, since I got rid of the PC, no longer use Rawshooter.

RSE handsdown over DPP. I didn't find that DPP has the versatility of RSE.

The Shadow and highlight contrast was a god send for me last week.
I did my first paying shoot of a work colleagues kids. She wanted very contrasty B&W images to blow up to 20x30 inches, and these particular options along with the exposure control allowed me to get some great results!
(Will post the shots up in a couple of weeks as she is on holiday and hasn't seen them herself yet...!) |

RSP is better than DPP if you need to do any major adjustments to brighness, color, etc. I took some pictures at an indoor ceremony, and there was a small window behind the podium that let in a lot of bright sunlight. Couldn't use flash. Looked at the RAW files and thought they were useless. DPP didn't help much. RSP gave me some very useable results.
However, DPP gives me better as-is results, including picture styles. So if I've gotten the exposure and WB pretty much right and I only have to fiddle with things a little bit, DPP is easier to use. RSP seems to give a lower contrast, less sharp picture with the default settings--you can get great results from it, but you have to do more work to get those results. |
