So, I've been planning a trip to Italy in July (hurray!). My wife gave me one look and said "You are not taking that huge bag with that huge tripod!" So I got the 18-200VR (hurray!). Then I started getting this irritating F-- error after taking around 50 shots. The problem occurs with all my Nikon lenses, but never with the Sigma 170-500 (hmmm?)I know it has something to do with the contacts on the camera, because if I mount the lens slowly, just before it clicks into place, the error disappears, but then I lose autofocus (hmmm?)

Obviously I don't want this to happen when I'm in Italy, so I send it in for repair. The local repair guy says he also found the same error, but can't repair it, so he's sending it off to Nikon. I heard yesterday (after two weeks) Nikon is sending it back without having done anything - they could not reproduce the error!

So you and I both know what is going to happen when I'm in Florence in perfect early morning light to take a pic of Pont Vecchio (a ribbon-winner for sure!)...

Well it's good that your camera is all good and ready for you trip.

Nikon took 2 weeks to get to you too, eh? I've had to get 3 things repaired by Nikon in the past 2 years. It took 2 weeks each time. They really need to improve their customer service...

Is the "F-ring" on the lens on 16 and locked? I get an error message sometimes, and it is always the same, the ring has moved from 16 to the next stop, or not even that far, a millimeter is enough and I get the FEE message. So I lock the ring most of the time.
Psst, is there any way you can smuggle your lenses and tripod along, you are going to wish you took the tripod at least...........
I have been to Italy a few times, going without a tripod is not the best idea I have heard this week. ><;-(

I agree with GuGi. Tripods are a must, even with VR. I can't remember a single vacation that I haven't taken at least one night shot. I usually take the center column out of my tripod and put the two pieces diagonally in my suitcase. Maybe you can pack light and fit yours in too.

You guys are right, I will have to take some kind of tripod. Anyway, about that error, I get it even if I use a type G lens. So there must be some other misallignment somewhere...

And the F ring on the lens is on 16? Not via the camera controls, but the lensring closest to the camerabody.
