I am working on my smugmug website. Here is the link: J Ralston Photography

See how my header is solid black, which is how I create it in PS? Is there a way to save the image as a transparency so that smugmug's background shows through and still use it with smugmug?

Thanks!

I think with it being transparent it has to be a gif, but I could be wrong on that!

Or you could use PNG. But then you run into browser problems. IE only displays transparent PNGs using a ugly hack.

edit: Oh, I see what you mean now. GIF is enough for the header.

As stated Gif is the way to go for transparent images.

BTW, hopefully not hijacking the thread but can I ask about your layout? Is that a smugmug item or did you design it. Specifically I like how you can choose the style so they display different ways. Really cool.

Feel free to PM me if you want to retain the original thread.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you everyone. I will try it as a gif.

My layout is the SmugMug 'black arts' layout. The only thing I have messed with so far is changing the header and the footer to my own.

I'll have to check out that forum I need to figure out how to add buttons to link to other pages and such. It's all so overwhelming right now!!!

You could also use the Alpha CSS style.

style="filter:alpha(opacity=50);-moz-opacity:0.5;opacity: 0.5;"

//www.hypergurl.com/cssalphafilter.html
//www.fred.net/dhark/demos/css/css_filter_examples.html <- This one i like. :D

That doesn't work for all browsers.

PNG. PNGs can be transparent, but they retain all the quality of a a JPG.

PNGs can also be semi-transparent.

But, as stated earlier, IE does not render the alpha channel (transparency) of a PNG image without some Javascript hackery.
