With reference to a recent Challenge I entered "A Bird In the Hand is Worth Two In The Bush".
In the UK This particular Bird is called a Racing Pigeon, each day they are releasedfrom their Pigeon Lofts and Fly for about 2 Hours before returning home.
On a weekend they are transported anywhere from 50 to 350 Miles from their Home. As many as 10,000 Birds could be released at One Time.
The Pigeon Fancier (Keeper)has a specialy calculated clock that times the Birds on their return.
Their are evaluations given to each Pigeon Loft from the distance of the race and this is equated and Times Given to decide the winners.
No One knows why the Birds Fly directly back as quickly as Possible but they were also used in the First World War as vehicles for transporting messages back and foreward.
Hope you have found this post interesting.

Cheers.

It's a serious pastime in this part of the world... Most tall apartment buildings have a coop on the top and some low lying buildings have some pretty impressive coops too..

If you can see any serious portion of the sky (Taipei is extremely urban), you are likely to see pigeons flying around at any given time of day.

Firecrackers are used in the pastime and are frequently heard at random. Certain times of year are more popular, but the hardcore guys fly all the time. I've seen them in January and May.

They are easily distinguished because they always fly in circles or squareish patterns. If you look at the top of many apartment buildings, you will often see a big bamboo pole with a red flag on it.

makes for some pretty unimpressive photography though...

Someone should photoshop this guy to be covered with NASACR promo logos. That would be sweet.
