Hi, I have an Olympus E300. Some of my photos when printed appear flat and almost as if they have a gray film over them. I was talking to someone else with the same camera and they said the same thing. Is this a settings issue and we haven't quite got it right? Happens mostly with photos taken outside.(still learning as have never used a SLR before so have to start from scratch), Any ideas to try to fix would be appreciated.

What metering mode are you using? Try center-weighted or spot (or equivalent to these in your camera). This can happen when using auto-ESP. Anyway, this is just a guess.

You can also boost up in-camera contrast setting to highest (+5 ??).

Thanks for that. Will give that a go as I do use auto - ESP.
Will try the contrast also - haven't had a play with that yet. After only using a point and shoot for film and digital, a DSLR has a lot to learn, but it is great fun.

Have you upgraded the firmware to 1.3? The stock firmwared E-300's are notorious for having bad WB and metering problems.

Settings are a personal preference and can be determined really only by what you may be trying to achieve and some experience with what you like.
A few links which may help:

Some basic settings in menu 2 on the E-300 that I often use include:
(these settings require post processing, but will render minimal effects)
saturation: -2 (low)
contrast: -2 (low)
sharpness: -2 (low)

For print work you may also need determine settings outside the camera, ie. optimum printer settings.

Hi there,

as some have stated you might check into the latest firmware update, also make sure your metering mode is not set to ESP. ESP is really a last ditch mode for me to use. It seems to have alot of issue rendering WB and good color, I generally use spot on my E300. I also want to see if you printed these straight out of the camera or if they were edited at all. Most dSLR cameras will require some editing for the photo to look correct. Another thing I want to mention, where did you have these printed and on what type of paper? When I print from my HP7760 I have to use Premium paper because of the resolution of the camera, or they end up with a grey haze over them, as the paper does make a huge difference. When we print from the wifes P&S we can use "everyday"(thats what the package says) photo paper. I'd suggest at least Auto color, Auto levels, auto contrast, and then reprint them with premium paper if done at a home printer and then re-evaluate the situation, congrats on joining the Olympus family of dSLR cameras. If I can help anymore please let me know.

I noticed all my images from my old Oly-3000 was like that, very dull and flat. I thought it would be better when I got my 5050 but they also seem very flat. But as tejinder also suggested I up'd the contrast and saturation a bit and seems to help some. I also shoot in RAW so that helps me fix those things easier.

Good luck and if you can't figure it out...send it may way, I'm moving to Okinawa in September for a year and really need a new camera, flat images or not. :) j/k of course

Do they look ok on screen? Or is it only printed photos that look dull and flat?

Thanks everyone. All great ideas and I will give them a go. Mostly I am very happy with the camera and very rarely use my Point and shot now. Most problems I have now are operator error, but it is fun learning. Must enter some challenges. Good luck to anyone entering at the moment.
