Triangle Photographers Assoc has their spring meeting yesterday and today. i couldn't make yesterday, but today i went.
morning speaker was Vicki Tauffer - //www.vgallery.net/
She startedin photography about 5 years ago knowing little, and has grown her studio, located in a small town in Illinois to $400,000 a year in sales and 5500 SF. She is a ball of energy. Got some good ideas on marketing, HS senior shooting and such.
afternoon speaker was a bit more interesting, or shall we say, he wowed us with his client's weddings. $35,000 cakes. Million dollar tents, $300,000 A/C bills for said tent (that took 3 months to put up BTW), $500,000 for flowers....you know, kinda high end LOL. Andy Marcus. Shoots primarily in film, hasselblad for color, canon for b&w, with a little digital outdoors. his studio work is all digital.
He talked for 3 hours, took and answered questions - very informative. His weddings average $40-50,000 with his biggest being $200,000. For that money you get 8 (eight) photogs with assistants. He's looking for good assistants - if you're in NYC and want to work - $250ish a day. Must have a tux and no facial piercings and want to learn.
The trade show was fun - got another muslin BG from //www.coleandcompany.com/ - sale this time - 10x20 painted muslin...$99. What a deal. Got an omnibounce to play with, and worked a deal with a framing company and ordered some sample albums from ArtLeather. Got a free memory wallet from canon (ok, 2 of them) and got to see their new printer (big mutha) - imagePROGRAF iPF5000 - 12 inks. $1800ish. they had a neat little display with their camera sesnors in it - the APC, HPC and FF sesnors side by side. neat. got to hold the tiny little 85 1.2. well, ok, NOT tiny. HUGE, HEAVY and expensive. Awesome though.
got a good bit of wedding posing and shooting ideas - very nice to know i think like andy marcus in a lot of ways. now to charge like him...
