what is an xmp file?
I seem to get them sometimes when I shoot RAW.
Do I need them?
Should I errase them?
Are they some sort of backup file?

if you make changes to the raw file, that is where it's stored so your 'negative' remains intact.
edit- I believe it is also your camera settings info and keywords etc. can anyone confirm?

If you are using Adobe Camera Raw to convert your files it "remembers" the settings you apply in the conversion so you can convert again without having to work them out again. Of course, it doesn't save these to the RAW file itself but records them elsewhere.
In ACR preferences you can either set it to save this info in a central database folder or in XMP (sidecar) files in the same location as the original RAW files.

Yes, and using the "sidecar" files comes in really handy if you do backups to DVD/CD because you can have the settings go along with the file.

I recently did some back ups to dvd, I did not see the xmp files.
I used Nero Burning Rom.
Is there something in the preferances to makesure I see the files? or is that in the Nero app.?

I would think Nero doesn't care. Nero will burn what you tell it to. If in the Add process you didn't take the xmp files then they won't get copied.
Adding folders rather than individual files would probably work better since everything in the specified folder would get burned. |
