I'm a groomsman at a wedding on Saturday but I've been asked to setup a photo-guestbook booth in the foyer where all of the guests will be photographed.
I'm hoping for a basic white wall to use as a backdrop, bringing my two photofloods with bowl reflectors to help with fill light, I may also try a bounced sb-800 on a seperate tripod (sb-26 extender cable). I wish I had a lightsphere but I didn't have time to order it. Is something like this (Photoflex LiteDome Q39) worth purchasing?
I'll be shooting with either my 18-70mm or the 50mm, the key being able to get a 4-5 person family in the frame without having to back-up across half the foyer.
Are there any other suggestions to make this work well? Obviously the bride/groom are not expecting studio quality shots but it'd be nice if I could deliver something decent for their guestbook. |

How would you get these pictures printeda as you go? The way that I've seen this done is with a Polaroid camera so you can hand the pictures to the guests as soon as you take it then they go ahead and stick it on the book and sign the book. Just my 2 cents.

Dont think he needed to print them on the go.
But if there's really a need, there are always portable photo printers.
Actually if you have a roof, a bounced flash would be good enough, since like you said, as long it's decent. |

The idea of a photo guestbook is that guests glue their picture to the book and then write whatever it is they are going to write next to it or below it, whatever. So yes, he'd have to print them as he goes.

I'd say forget about setting up the floods...just use 2 flashes.
One on camera and one on a light stand with an umbrella and either shoot through or bounce it.
You should have more than sufficient light.
Use a diffuser if you have it on the camera flash or bounce with a white card.
This way if you need to move around to get the shots you can and you wont be in the way and having to run wires and such.

They did something like that at my wedding - loved it. For fun, you could have a prop available that everyone has to use in the photo. We had a couple different size picture frames(oversized - made from patterend wood trimming and spray-painted gold) that everyone had to use. The resulting book with the photos and the comments are absolutely fantastic!

What if he had sheets of large self-adhesive labels?
The guests could do their writing, then later he can put each sticker into the album with the photo. |

These won't be printed live. We'll take the memory cards and get them printed later. They'll be placed in a photo album beside a 4x6 card on which the guest had written their greeting.
The other consideration is that there isn't going to be much moving around going on. I won't be taking the photos, I am setting up my camera and then there is someone else (unfortunately with no photo experience) simply framing up the shot and releasing the shutter.
I'm looking in to the possibility of renting another sb-600 or 800 with a tripod and umbrella but if that doesn't happen, what would be the best thing I could do with a single flash? |
