Why do cameras pick the most awkward time to break?

I was at an event this morning that I really needed my camera at. So I charged the batteries, cleared the memory cards, cleaned the lens and put it in the carry case.

At the event I took it out of the case, and the batteries dropped to the floor! - The battery compartment door in had broken. I knew it was coming, the plastic tabs were getting weaker and weaker over time. I tried using tape to keep it closed, but it has quite a strong spring on it, and it kept powering off.

(It's not my camera in this shot, just showing the tabs which broke)

Sounds like a really really good excuse for me to upgrade..... :)

Sorry about the malfunction! Did you manage to shoot anything worth keeping at the event? I'd say you could use a nice Canon to take your mind off it! ;)

Take a picture of the broken camera with another camera and enter in in the failure challenge! :)

I managed about 5 shots, but it meant holding the camera in such as way as I was applying pressure to the compartment door with my thumb, and trying to press the shutter at the same time. Not very practical.

Canon? - Who are they?

Excellent idea! - How about a shot of me looking on in horror as the batteries fall to the floor? :D

The battery cover on my old Coolpix 950 is broken also. A little duct-tape will keep it shut for a while though :-)
