can someone explain in detail the purpose of so many multiple email accounts?
what would i use all of them for?
why would others need an email account at my site? or did i misunderstand that part?

I have four e-mail accounts.
One for general registration on sites.
One for my bills.
One for friends and family.
One on my smugmug site. (this is where all the junk e-mail comes from)

I have a weird email system with my domain. Not too many other people do it this way but I don't get any spam so I dig it.
Basically, I have my main account that I use for personal stuff/friends, etc. My account is set up for unlimited aliases. I have it set so that all aliases forward to my main account. Whenever I sign up for a new site/mailing list/password, whatever, I use the name of the site as my email address. For example, my email when I signed up here was dpc@hyperbolical.org. For amazon, it's amazon@hyperbolical.org, etc.
This does two things: 1. I can figure out where I'm getting spam from. When I get spam at dpc@hyperbolical.org, I know it's because my email address is listed publically in my profile here. But when I'm getting it from a site where my address isn't publically listed, I know that the site is selling my address.
2. When I start getting spam at a certain address, I can just zap that one. Then, the only place I need to notify of a new address is the one site I signed up at. That means I don't have to change email addresses everywhere every 3 months when the spam gets unbearable.
This system works perfectly for me.
But otherwise, people don't necessarily need email at your domain. But not everyone who signs up for a domain gets one for personal use. Companies use domains too and they like to have lots of email addresses. |

ok so why do u need email for bills? thats the part that i dont understand. i have a hotmail account, so do I really need all the others? is it to just separate work from pleasure? cause the site was offering 50 - Unlimited email accounts. I cant imagine why i would need 50 email accounts or 10 for that matter. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing something. thanks Rex.

I have a seperate account just for bills only because it helps me keep things organized in Outlook. If it comes to my bills e-mail Outlook puts it in a Bills folder. Therefore I know I have a bill due.

Every time I have to post an e-mail address on a web site, I make up a new e-mail address for that specific purpose. That way, if I start getting spam at that address, I know who was responsible for generously selling my e-mail address without my permission, and I can just delete the address without affecting my normal routine.
I have dozens of addresses with dozens of purposes. They all come to the same mailbox in the end, so it's not a big hassle for me to manage them.
I have a different e-mail address that I use for DPC... one for ordering stuff at B&H, one for Best Buy, one for Amazon, etc., etc.
EDIT: I guess I could have simply said, "Yeah, I do what MK does."

It's not weird at all [but then my domain has several hundred email aliases, so it's the pot calling the kettle black so to speak] :-)
I have a couple of base email accounts and bazoodels of aliases on these. I use aliases instead of email accounts because most are just incoming so I never need to send under that ID. If one gets hit with spam, I change at the source place where that ID is used and point the old one to the bit bucket (trash). |
