I forgot to add, I always ensure the flash is ready before I put the Lightsphere on - no worries!

I'm sorry, this cup thing just sounds so gross to me. There is absolutely no way in hell I am gonna stick my fingers in there while I have my period to place some cup in. Not happening. God bless tampons with biodegradable applicators.

Woohoo! oops, did I just say a bad word?

This thread is disturbing, intriguing and apetite-suppressing all at the same time. G'night all - if I don't get some sleep, I'll feel like doodoo in the morn. I hope "doodoo" still means what I think it means. :/

There he goes only thinking about his flash again.

Crayon, it's always better to get the lightsphere ready! Have I taught you nothing?

Wow, I'm amazed at the completely backwards spin this thread has...

It says that it's for females, and probably 60% of the posts have been by men.

It says it's sensitive material, and good number of said 'male' comments have been a little less than sensitive... Some, particularly young females can be a little uncomfortable with such discussions... It's generally best to use a little bit of empathy before saying stuff hassling girls in their choice of words in a rather obviously non-female restricted public forum discussing personal matters... Discretion? Come on boys! A modicum of good taste perhaps? Maybe it's little wonder girls feel so uncomfortable talking about things...

and it says it's unrelated to photos and here we are discussing the lightsphere... heh. Ok, but that parts just plain funny!

Incidentally, the menstrual cup has been around for a long time. I used to work at a health store, and they had a number of different solutions for containment. Another popular one is the sea sponge. Quite natural, but rather inconvenient if you are using a public bathroom... I understand that sizing is pretty important... That's usually the point in the discussion where I passed the customer off to a female employee though... duhh... :)

Incidentally, I had a physical at a Taiwanese hospital a while back and while it's true that most doctors in Taiwan are able to speak English (too much of their course material is printed in English and is a SERIOUS chore to translate to Chinese where many of the words that are used are beyond even advanced native Chinese speakers' ability... same goes for engineers and computer specialists), I generally do my best to speak to them in Chinese out of respect and a desire to learn. Having had a few friends go through the hospital, indeed one of which nearly died in a serious motorcycle accident, and required full 24 hour care for two weeks, I've found that having knowledge of medical chinese to be more than a little important.

The doctor referred to the penis as a 'xiao di di' aka a 'small little brother'. Apparently, the doctor will refer to the female equivalent as a 'xiao mei mei' which is 'small little sister'. There are official names for them, but not everyone knows them.

For a real surprise, the Taiwanese person that I spoke with regarding the official medical terms revealed to me that to his knowledge, there was NO non-vulgar term in Taiwanese (a dialect) for the female genitals. Kinda disturbing actually. Medicine is not taught in Taiwanese. :)

Thanx eschelar. I figured that this thread would either die immediately or go in a totally different direction, as these threads tend to do on DPC. That's why I invited anyone who has a real question to PM me if they feel uncomfortable here, but mostly, the websites referred to answer just about everything. I think I have succeeded in at least bringing more awareness to the subject.

as for chiqui's comment, yes that is the downside. for someone who is squimish to get closer to touching something than they have to, this probably would not work. I personally only rinse it out once in the morning in the shower and once before bed, and thoroughly wash it with soap.

I find that for me, it is much cleaner than tampons that leak and have to be changed (for me every hour) all the time and pads which I don't even have to explain. For some reason, tampons made me feel much less clean, I guess because you just keeping putting more cotton up there and replacing it instead of rinsing everything and starting fresh. But yes, you do get your hands dirty, though that's not a problem for me, as I immediately wash them.

As for the unrelated to photos, I couldn't have expected any thread on a site for the obsessed (photographers) to not turn into something related.... hahahaa... however the lightsphere does have an uncanny and freaky resemblance.

yeah, I had to take some environmental classes last semester to fulfil the "Theme" requirement. one of the classes, with mark stemen, was actually really interesting. we even had to go out and plant trees as an assignment. pretty cool.

he always enjoyed me being in class, I was the anti-hippie and we always had fun getting into heated debates over stuff, although the rest of the class would generally get butthurt (durned hippies) but overall, he was really effective in changing my mind about a lot of stuff and had some really good ideas - a lot of crusaders and environmentalists, etc., get so worked up about stuff, that they forget to logically explain the reasoning to the rest of us.

and thanx for the good luck sent my way, definitely will need some of that.

The Diva Cup site does an excellent job of explaining it. It's a lot of reading but there are things a person can do to help eliminate getting your hands dirty.

I was surprised by Chiqui's statement....only because I know she was recently in the service. And if you go to this one site (it escapes right this minute) where you can send things to our soldiers in Iraq one of the things for women was a menstrual cup. I had never heard of it until I read it on that site! I was always curious how women dealt with that issue if they were out in the field fighting...now I know!

Awareness of health issues is my angle too :).

Incidentally, be careful with the type of soap you use on your cup and make sure you are careful with rinsing it. Chemicals, perfumes and residues are all bad for highly sensitive areas. There's also a pretty important bacterial balance going on that can be thrown off by these things too.

Rinsing carefully after using a mild soap should be sufficient.

Quite ironic that this was posted by a male, don't ya think? ;-)

well, I didn't want to get into too much detail, but yes, rinsing most of the time and gentle non-fragant soap every so often and boiling between periods, and storing in the breathable fabric pouch that it comes with (the cup, not my hoohoo... lol) but yeah, that's another big corporate thing I don't agree with, is the advertisement of douches, not really good for your body at all, but they must do a good job selling them to people. Your body has a natural way of cleansing itself, but there ya have, too much info... that's ok, I think this whole thread has been TMI...

but thanx for the info eschelar

As a female, I feel women should not be uncomfortable talking about these things. The more we talk openly about them, including men, the less uncomfortable "young girls" will be and certainly a more healthy attitude will be taken. Joking is part of that. Too often women (and men) will not go to doctors, talk to their parents or even their friends about concerns over these so called "embarassing" part of their bodies or normal bodily functions. My mother wouldn't talk about anything and at the age of 10, I began menstruating and thought I was dying. It was the "curse" according to friends - great name for becoming a woman ! I didn't make the same mistake with my children, girl and boy, so they are both totally relaxed about these and similar matters.
Oh dear - soapbox again!
My apologies - I woke up feeling really yukky this morning so you are suffering - and no it's not PMT!!!!!!!

I used to date a girl who swore by something like this, I can't remember the brand but it wasn't the ones listed at the top of the thread. She moved to Louisiana and one of her big concerns was that she would have trouble finding them there.

Ooop sorry about the thread necromancy...thought this was an active thread and couldn't figure out how to delete my post

The hell with thread necromancy AND this only being 'for woman'!

I for one am proud to be a father of 3 daughters, and a husband to one terrific woman. I'm also very comfortable with the human body (male or female), and the fact that intelligent conversation regarding our health is WAY more important than someone being a little embarrassed.

As far as that goes, I only wish my grandmother had been open enough to discuss the function of the female reproductive system with my mother. My mother was never informed of how her body worked, and became an unwed mother at only 16.

I realize that some people are taught that "We don't talk about that kind of thing!", or that going to the doctor is only for the dying... think it doesn't still happen? Last night, at my daughter's Christmas recital, a friend admitted that he refused to go to the doctor about a potentially lethal heart condition. His reason? "I was raised that doctors are full of beans & a waste of good money - they're too fancy with all them years of school...I'll be alright."

Anyway, my point is that educating our children / friends / loved ones is worth a little akwardness, and that if even one man reads this will help his wife or daughter somehow then, dammit!, let's talk about it.

Whew!!! Sorry for the rant, and thanks to the OP - just one more thing that will help me raise 3 healthy, beautiful young ladies into mature & informed women.

Ahh... 10 minutes of precious sleeping time.

Some more tips for saving time in the mornings;

- Wear your suit to bed. Just make sure you don't move around too much in your sleep

- Buy slip-on shoes that you can just step into when you wake up

- Cut your hair really short means you don't have to brush it

- Toothbrush and toothpaste in a desk drawer

- Cereal bar for breakfast in the car (before you shave)

This is the part I don't get. By putting in the cup you are holding back all that tissue and blood that your body is trying to expel. How can a tampon (used properly) make you feel dirty but the cup doesn't? The tampon at least is absorbing the flow away from your body (and its only difficult to pull out if you are using too absorbant a tampon for the amount of flow). I'm sure that the cup has some useful applications and is environmentally friendly as you say it is, but it sounds to me like it would interfere with the body's natural way of cleansing itself. I don't think I'd want to keep dying tissue in my body any longer than it has to be.

Btw, if you don't plan to have children for 5 years, there is a way to reduce your flow significantly (some women stop having periods) while also having one of the most effective, no-hassle birth control methods available. Its an IUD called the "Mirena." Its worth looking into, but its not cheap. The fact that you don't have to buy as much (or any) sanitary products can balance out the cost. Its not really recommended for women who have never had children though because its inserted by the doctor through the cervix which is apparently a lot easier after a women has had a child.

BTW, laughing about these things can make it easier to talk about, imo.
