The Perfect Composition & Exposure Workshop
with Julia Dean
THIS COMING WEEKEND! Saturday, May 20th, 9 am – 5 pm
This one-day workshop is for intermediate photographers who want to get a better grasp of how to expose film or digital correctly in various lighting situations. The lecture will incorporate the zone system of exposure, the difference between exposing with negative film versus positive film (or digital), why and when to change you ISO with both a film and digital camera. The class will also talk at length about composition and seeing light. With each discussion, an assignment follows. A critique of the work will take place during the day, as well.

This is a six-week course on portrait lighting. This class is full, but there will be another one coming in our next season!

Fine Art Photography: The Next Step with Aline Smithson

Thursday evenings, 7-10 pm; June 1 – July 6
This six-week class provides the emerging photographer with skills to shape a portfolio so that it is ready to be introduced to the fine art market. The course is meant to give insight into the gallery world. Discussions will include how to build and write a resume, how to enter photography competitions (and where to find the contest information), when to attend portfolio reviews, and how to edit and prepare work for exhibition. Information about writing grant and exhibition proposals is also covered. This is the perfect class for those who are need help in getting their work out there!

This class is all about learning how to use your flash, as the main source of light, and as fill flash.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers — I with Natasha Calzatti

This four-week class will cover scanning, image manipulation, and printing using Adobe Photoshop CS2 and will teach the benefits of using a digital darkroom. Students will also learn to understand the ways in which Adobe Photoshop CS2 interprets and manages color thereby answering the question: "How do I make my prints match the image on my monitor?" This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac stations equipped with an Intuos 2 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS2 software. Additionally, participants will learn about layers and their benefits, how files should be saved and why (tiff, psd, jpg), printing techniques for fine art prints using the Epson 2400 printer, and so much more.
Workshop fee: $320
Maximum enrollment: 10 students
Held at our Fairfax Campus: At Samy's Camera.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers — II with Natasha Calzatti
Saturdays, 2:30 – 5:30 pm; June 3-24
This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac station equipped with an Intuos 2 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS2 software. The purpose of this class is to raise the participant's knowledge to a more professional level of digital workflow and build on the fundamentals obtained from the course Adobe Photoshop for Photographers -- I. Color management, monitor calibration, color settings in Photoshop, and output profiles will be covered in detail.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 101 for the Digital Photographer with Natasha Calzatti
Thursdays, 5-8 pm; June 8 & 15
This two-week class is meant for those people who would like to manipulate photographs just for fun. This is a hands-on class, with each student using an Apple eMac station equipped with an Intuos 2 graphics tablet and Adobe Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 software. Students will learn why and when to shoot in raw mode, how to organize images in file browser, and how to create and print top-quality images, Students will also learn to create and use layers for flexible editing, while learning how to brush away wrinkles and unwanted objects using the Spot Healing Brush for instant results and the Healing Brush for finer control. In addition, students will learn how to control color temperature and tint in order to get the best overall color possible.
The Non-Silver Print
Platinum & Palladium & Cyanotypes with Norma C. Smith
Sundays, 10 am – 2 pm; June 4 – June 25
Learn to make beautiful prints in the tradition of the early photographic masters. This hands-on class will give students an opportunity to make Platinum/Palladium and Cyanotype prints. All four three-hour sessions will include historical background, discussion of the processes and materials, and a lot of printmaking and critique. Participants will need to bring enlarged negatives to the class. (We will provide contacts that can provide this service.)

Fine Art Digital Printmaking with R. Mac Holbert

Join digital pioneer R. Mac Holbert in a day of fine art printmaking. This workshop combines a comprehensive tutorial of digital workflow with printmaking demonstrations. The morning session focuses on techniques for image capture, processing, and output. Mac shares his expertise with color management, tonal adjustments, image editing, sharpening, and paper choices used to create museum quality prints on technology accessible to professionals and dedicated amateurs alike. The afternoon session focuses on the review of participants̢۪ digital files and prints. Mac walks through the entire process, explaining the techniques he applies while preparing the images and making Epson sprints.
Advanced Canon Digital EOS Workshop with Amy Kawadler
Sunday, July 16; 9 am – 5 pm
IF you have taken Amy̢۪s Intro to the Canon System workshop or are proficient with basic camera operations and wish to explore the new realm of digital, this is the workshop for you. The days̢۪ topics will be camera operations, exposures, digital features and workflow. This class primarily focuses on creative digital capture and maximizing the participants comfort level with Canon Digital EOS Cameras. This is one exciting, jam-packed day!
