Im getting very frustraited. Ive taken my photo for the "heat" challenge and im trying to work on it in post a bit and Im not getting it. Its driving me crazy because this shot has such potential and I just cant get it to "pop" the way i would like. My photoshop skills are decent but i still have alot to learn. I basically need to darken the background and make my subject stand out a bit more. I tried using levels, brightness/contrast and im comming close but im not nailing it. Is it something that i need to use curves to fix (thats the one tool im not very proficient with... any tutorials on that would be great too) or any other suggestions please let me know

If your using photoshop then i suggest trying the "selective color" option and playing with the neutral and black colors

Here is a little trick I do with curves on a lot of my photos:
do a curves adjustment layer, when the curves box opens, put an anchor point dead center where the lines cross, then put a point at the intersection of the top 2 lines, and drag that point up, put a point at the intersection of the bottom 2 lines, drag that point down, so you will end up with a big 'S' looking curve. Hit ok, don't freak out, the picture will look like crap :-), then immediately in the layers palatte, click on the 'opacity', and slide the slider all the way to 0, then slowly bring it back up, to taste. Usually somewhere between like 8 and 20. This can like add some tonal range, and a little depth, IMO. Anyways, if you like, try it out and see what you think. :-)

This is advanced editing....if you know how to "mask" then mask what you want to stand out and "dull" everything else somewhat. Of course that is a simplified statement but basically that is what you could try.

It allows you to work on what you want "popping" out. There is little that curves or levels will do if you are applying it to the whole picture.

My 2 cents !

Edit: The suggestion in the post before this one should be tried first !
