Due to the growing grumbling about flowers in EVERY SINGLE challenge, I think we should do a free study where the only restriction is: No flowers.

What were your entries in the "Yellow" and "Duotones" challenges?
05/17/2006 10:31:48 AM · #3
It's already been suggested. ;^)

I say we add water drops, glass containers, striped backgrounds, lady bugs, windmills, kids, pets, sunsets, etc...

Hey, I know - let's not shoot anything at all and just close up shop.

It's all been done before at some point - some WAY more than others.

The complaining about flower shots is at least as tired, if not moreso, than the actual number of flower entries.

I quite like flower shots, well some of them.

Since Im one of the Flower lovers that post alot of photos of flowers heres a piece of my profile that i think shuld be read by alot of the flower haters here:

"For thoes of you who hate seeing"another flower" photo try looking at the photo. what is it about that flower the photographer wanted to photograph? I happen to love( and i mean love) photographing flowers. Its my thing. I have always loved flowers and i tend to want to remember one flower over another for one reason or another. It might be the color(royal splash), could be the petals themselves(double tiger,Burst of blue 1), the water on the petals(heaven tears, after the rain, and dalhia), or the shadows created by light playing on the petals(hide n seek, glad to be red) that im really taking the photo of. so please dont just look at a flower photo and do the whole "roll the eyes and say " oh geesh...another flower". look at it please and vote what you feel the photo deserves."

edit to add the photos Im talking about and 2 more to prove my point!

If you have a no flower contest then it will be entirely cat/dog and kid pictures, with maybe a touch of refracted wine glasses.

Cher ... Your flowers are in my way of thinking "careful studies". They could even be called portraits ... I have no problem with those at all.

I have a problem with ones that seem to be default ... "I cant find anything else so I'll enter some flower snapshot"

i am not really understanding what the problem is with flowers.

they are gorgeous subjects (probably more so than humans), and they are able to convey a wide range of emotions.

in every challenge you got some no talent punk (that would be me) entering it. and that person that has no artistic side YET should be learning about what art is, and is not (in my case). ifn a person thinks that his shot of a flower is gonna win a challenge then it will be entered, even if the challenge specifically states no flowers. people in their quest to show artistic expression and to do something different than everyone else are not following the classic definitions of art. portrait, still life, etc.

flowers cannot be discounted as subjects. every challenge does have gallons of them, but there is always 1 or 2 that are great.

i enter challenges with my crappy photos and no one whines because it is never just flowers. i take crappy photos of everything. lol. are we gonna say that untalented photogs cannot enter?

the point of this site is growth, at least that is my point. ifn we eliminate the ability for growth by not allowing horrible pics (yes sometimes flowers are horrible) in the challenges, then the whole point of the site for a lot of people would be destroyed.

when you see a bad pic vote accordingly, when you see a good one (even a flower) vote accordingly.

thanx

I SAY ANOTHER FLOWER CHALLEGE!!!! Thats What it sounds like!!! LOL =)

How about 'Deflowered' instead. That should make for some interesting approaches to the challenge!

We could do a "No flowers," and a "Flowers Only" challenge.... give the flower people a chance to shine.

I like flowers too, obviously, I just wonder at them in challenges like "Enviromental Portrait." There was another one that I was wondering who in the world would think a flower would meet the challenge, but I don't remember right now.

WARNING POSSIBLITY OF COMING ACROSS MAD AND RUDE NOT INTENDED, JUST TRYING TO SET EVERYONE STRAIGHT.

To set the record straight, there were a couple flower entries but most likly everyone has been talking about mine.

As stated in many enviromental portrait threads (as best as possible without giving away specifics)...it was a mistaken entry. I didn't read the details as well as I usually do. I saw enviromental and thought nature, I saw someone post that it was supposed to be something NON staged in a studio, in their own enviroment...I didn't however consider the fact that it had to be a person in that persons own enviroment. My bad.

I talked to SC about self-DQ and decided to just hold it out and recieve the numerous DNMC comments...(BTW thanks for the comments about the technical aspects of the image such as color, DOF, sharpenss, etc).

I apologize that it was a "DNMC" but I didn't think I should take a self-DQ for it so I left it there.

No hopefully that is clear and everyone understands why there was ANOTHER flower in a challenge it didn't belong in.

In order to prevent further hi-jacking of this thread and it's original idea I please ask anyone with comments to my image or me do so via PM or in your own thread. I will not be answering any in here.

On the OP idea of No flower and Flowers only challenge...Great idea! But I am wondering how many people will actually vote in the "flowers only" since everyone is supposedly tired of seeing them.

I like the idea of a Flowers and a No Flowers challenge. Works for me.

The No Flowers is almost a Free Study, which is always popular. I think that Flowers might draw more entries than we expect considering how much flower shots are put down in these forums. And it will get plenty of votes, I wouldn't worry about that. I don't think people really dislike well done flower shots but some are tired of seeing them entered into challenges where they feel it is a stretch of the topic.

Flowers and No Flowers would make a good pair to offer as exclusives, one for the people who like to shoot close to the topic and the other for people who don't like being restricted by a topic.

Sab, that's such a lovely photo.

I think the Flowers challenge would be hugely popular. Though, I bet we'd get some wiseguys who'd enter sunsets and/or trees.

Though, I think having a series of challenges where each time we pick one thing that it absolutely can't be is a good one: No flowers. No cars. No water drops. No nudes. Just to see what people come up with.

Thanks, ragamuffingirl.

I also agree with you and coolhar, haveing both and at the same time would be very nice. I also agree that some challenges should be an exclusive subject...heck we had a macros without bugs challenge once, why not Nature without flowers? I am overall totally FOR this idea.

and I promise to read details better ;)

:)))

I think part of my flower issue is that I often wonder why the photographer would want to waste such a lovely picture on a challenge it doesn't seem to belong in.
