It's pretty clear that I could use some formal instruction to improve my photography, and I've wanted to take a class for a long time. Does anyone have any opinions about Chicago Photography Center's classes?

It looks OK (didn't see the cost in my perusal), but I bet if you hang around here for six months - enter a couple dozen challenges, interact in the forums, start critiquing images and letting others critique yours - you'll get the same effect as that class.

Just IMO.

I see you are a new member, welcome. Another Chicagoan, sorry you missed the recent Chicago GTG.

Looks like the big thing in the class is taking pics and critiquing them, with some basic lectures here and there. So, I agree with John(strangeghost), as an alternative if you just hang out here you will learn quite a bit by just participating. Start by searching the forums, reading the tutorials and browsing the challenges. If you want to shell out the $400 for the course, let me know how it is :-)

A few to look at to start with are the "dpc mentorship" and learning threads

Learning Thread ΓΆ€” Landscape Photography

Photoshop Basics Mentorship Group: Workflow Thread

DPC Mentorship - Exposure

DPC Mentorship - Exposure Part II

DPC Mentorship - Natural Light

Hope this helps,

I'll go through the learning threads here, and someone else pointed me to Radiant Vista (I grabbed their podcasts).

Congrats on the red ribbon MayaM! I noticed there were quite a few Chicago loop pictures in the night shots challenge.

As long as you have the time and money, take the class. Everyone has different learning preferences. I feel I am much more productive in my photography courses than anything I do online.

Would people here be willing to give me some comments on some pictures I have in my portfolio? I have uploaded some shots into collections named 'nature' and 'anime'.

The first two in 'nature' are of Lake Tahoe at sunset. It was a trek to get to the spot for the actual sunset picture; I was waist deep in snow hoping I wouldn't miss a step and slide down the hill into the lake or a deeper pocket of snow.

Dunning Spring in Iowa is in a little valley which does not get much in the way of morning or evening light, and that shot was taken in the afternoon.

The costume shots are from various anime conventions. While the outdoor light was normally pretty good, the interior lighting was almost painful.

All of my modifications to the pictures would qualify as "Basic Editing," mostly because I'm not as proficient in some of the advanced editing techniques.

I'd like to improve my photography skills, so any helpful feedback would be appreciated.

I posted a request for comments in the Individual Photograph Discussion group.

The class at the Chicago Photography Center is photography only. There is no Photoshop part to the class. They do a Photoshop class after you have completed the first three classes on photography.

They also have a Fine Art Nude class for those of us with no experience

Hope this helps
