I know this might sound like a dumb question but it's valid because I am unsure

My theory... anytime your shooting, and there is light.... use a hood! It can save you from flare and helps to ensure the lens is only getting the light you intend for it to get. I have hoods for all my lenses 'cept the fisheye (can't use them with wide-angle).

Anytime you're shooting into the sun you should use a hood. It will help reduce lens flare.

I always use hoods. As well as preventing unwanted light they are good protection for the lens (apart from the 10-22 or 17-40 hoods - if you can call them hoods).

I pretty much leave the hood on because, like Andi says, it's an extra protection for the lens. The only time when I don't like having the hood on the lens is when I use the polarizer, because it's difficult (on my camera at least) to use the polarizer with the hood on.

And, like it's been said before, hoods look cool!

A big ditto from me. The only lens of mine that rarely gets used with a hood is the 100 macro, simply because with the hood, lighting macro shots is nigh impossible.
OK, the Peleng 8mm fisheye is another... and the Canon 15 fish has a built-in "vestigial hood" which is less a hood than even the 10-22 or 17-40 hoods!

I always have the hood on when I'm shooting. And sometimes it's even on when it's in my backpack. Last week, my backpack came unzipped while hiking (see tip below), the camera fell out and it landed on the lens hood. Hood broke. Camera and lens are fine. Moral of the story: It counts as protection *even* when in the bag!

True story:
Twice now my backpack has unzipped. Both times I had it zipped all the way up to the top (both left and right zippers all the way to the top). Both times I was hiking downhill (so a lot of bouncing going on). This time, I actually heard it unzip a split second before the camera fell out.

TIP:
My boy, who was with me, said ... yeah, that was always happening to his school backpack too. That's when he discovered that you should always zip both zippers down to the bottom (one side or the other). That way, they have nowhere to go (can't unzip).

Lesson learned.

d200 and 80-200/2.8 and hood --
the !@#@%!@!!! strap undid (@#$%@#^%!!!) -- droped 4ft to pavement ... was able to stick my foot under it - bounced off foot & bounced off pavement .. landed in the grass with just a large chip off the hood
would have distroyed the filter, hood mount & possibly the front element if it had bounced without the hood ....
