How close are you gonna be? Can you use flash?

Generally, you'll want as much aperture as you can get, so my money is on the 28-70 f/2.8.

your gonnna have to pump up the ISO, and try to use the stage lights to your advantage, you cand probably under expose by a few stops and still get a good shot,

maybe try shooting raw

They're not great lenses for gig photography... it really depends on the size of the gig and the particular lighting used for that event.
At some small gigs, I'll be struggling at ISO1600 1/30s f2.8
Other gigs I can get away with ISO400 1/125s F4
Sometimes I shoot at 12mm, other times I'm at 300mm.
But you're not really prepared for the usual light levels which are very low with your particular lenses.

i think the 2.8 will be OK. You will need to bump the ISO as high as you can. A cheap fast lens is the canon 50MM f1.8. Only $80. Try to avoid using flash, can piss off the band and venue people. I have used the kit lens at a gig before. Its pretty average. To get it sharp you need to stop down which means you need enough light to shoot handheld at about f4.0.

Shoot in RAW mode, and shoot in bursts.

With the 20D you can go to 1600 ISO, and even 3200 if you have to.
