will my 50mm 1.8 work well or is the focal length too long to get good shots of the cars? I'd hate to have to use my kit lens but I'm afraid I'm going to have to for alot of the shots.

Yeah, I found that 50mm is way to long for a car. Especially at a car show, when you can't get enough distance between you and the car without another person getting in your way.
At car shows, I've used my Nikkor 18-70mm mostly at the wide end.
You can take detailed shots of parts of the car with your 50mm though.
I would also bring a tripod, if the car show is indoors. It will let you use a low ISO. Also if there are a lot of people, you can use a very long exposure and possibly eliminate people walking in the background.
In all, bring the kit lens and the 50mm and tripod if you have one.
Also, if you used a flash, look to see if the reflectors on the cars are becoming a distraction. |

Thanks for the tips. The show is actually outdoors so that eliminates most lighting problems. I guess I'll have to just deal with having to use the kit lens for the wide stuff.

The kit lens isn't really all that bad.. sure, wide open it has pretty poor contrast and it's not the sharpest, but if you stop down a little it should be OK for some shots.

Yeah, I'll make it work. I've been spoiled by my 50mm f/1.8

probably an already known tip and not really what you asked, but I will offer it anyway...I found a polarizer is very nice to use to help reduce some of the reflections and glare off the car and windows but I have not found a way to clear both at the same time. Usually the angle of the windows makes it impossible to reduce the reflection there and in the cars paint so I take two images. One with the windows clear of glare and one with the car clear of glare then stack them, very helpful to have the tripod here so that you get exactly the same setup.
Good luck.
