playground in hell...

ok, so i have this pretty contrasty image (and, no, i didn't shoot in raw), that i'd like to be usable. i played with a selected layer and curves, and had a quite nice thing going, and then noticed this horrid edge around the subject. so, i tried the curves without selcting the subject, got this alarming (but kinda funky) version, and still had horrid, almost dotted and dashed, edges on the playground climbing thing.

these disappeared when i reduced to 640 pixels, but they were there, and they were ugly.

does anyone know what this is, or how i can fix it? i have pscs2 and noise ninja pro.

have you tried messing with shadow/highlights under image> adjustments? another trick is selecting the highlights (ctrl+alt+~) select inverse, new layer (ctrl-J) and set that layer to screen...

in camera sharpening set too high??

the camera sharpening (you can do that???) wasn't on, i did very little usm to the image, it was just the effect of the curves, i think. the edge looked like it was selected, even though it wasn't. there was a black and white (and i mean glowing white and pure black) speckled edge around the whole subject.

could it have been the tonal difference betweenthe foreground and background? can anyone think of another way to rescue this image from the scrapheap? i don't really want the hell playground effect, although it is funky. i just wanted a nice, subtle blue climber on the wispy grey/blue sky...

If the off-color of the edge is all that is giving you trouble I would start by isolating that edge. This can be done with the 'Find Edges' filter in PS (and probably other editing programs have similar), and then painting everything but that one edge black. Then have at it with Hue/Sat and Selective Color adjustments until it is the color and tone you want it to be.
