But Kevin, just because someone has differing opinions to yours doesn't mean they're immature! And this: "Referring to challenge entries in a marginally veiled manner could be seen as an attempt to attack other challenge submissions and, thus, to enhance your own score." is presumptious and OTT. I'm sorry that you're so upset about the matter. I made an observation, that's all.

Jon. What did you think I wrote or meant?

My comments had nothing to do with how I, you or anyone else on DPC interprets negative space. I wasn't referring to this challenge; I was referring to any challenge. I never said that having an opinion that differs to mine is immature. I said that referring to images within a contest during a contest wasn't as mature as choosing other examples of similar technique and presenting those images for dialogue. My concern is not whether anyone agrees with my assessment of an image or not. My concern is that we don't get so busy shouting at each other and scare away new photographers by using their works in arguments against each other. My comment referred only to making whatever point you choose to make by using other artwork than the ones currently in a challenge. If you like a usage of sky or grass or the hide of an animal as negative art in some photos but not in others then select an image that isn't currently in a contest and paste it into a thread like this for discussion of the techniques used. Choosing to comment negatively on people's artwork during a challenge could lead to running people off rather than opening a dialogue of different methodologies or interpretations. Please re-read my comment. Nothing in there was meant to be inflammatory; I didn't use caps or exclamations. I didn't argue for or against any interpretation of any particular technique.

You can discuss your feelings or views of a particular methodology to present your interpretation without being heavyhanded regarding someone else's work that is currently being voted on by the whole community. Perhaps choose some photos you've done that helped you to see the difference in using a particular technique such as negative space or shadows or perspective to help make your point without referring to other artwork in an ongoing challenge.

An example of what I'm espousing is that if I wanted to discuss depth of field I might use:

And then I would start discussing what I liked or didn't like about this image. Choosing to comment in an ongoing contest about pictures so that the picture(s) in question can easily be guessed is not a good way to promote communication or dialogue about different ways to accomplish a photographic technique.

Kevin, my brain just imploded - so I'll just say that I like that previous shot you posted very much - and I'm leaving this thread here. Suffice to say, yes - next time I'll try to make time and stick some examples in. ;)
