Very noob question, I apologize ahead of time. I'm trying to learn how to use GIMP to PP my photos. How do I transform a photo to black and white? I can't figure this out for anything. Thanks alot.

image, adjustements, grayscale..

or

image, adjustments, desaturate

i use photoshop, but i used gimp once and it was pretty much the same, those should work

i have the gimp 2.2

it seems to me. unsure what the real way is. but ifn you go to tools (on your image window) then color tools, there are 2 available optoions.

you can choose hue/saturation and just desaturate it. but that leaves it a bit bland.

you can also choose colorize. which does the monochrome thing. then desaturate. this gives it a bit more appeal in my opinion.

Well the reason I ask is I'm trying to figure out how to do the b&w photo and make part of the photo color. I'm having a hard time figuring it out from the tutorial I found. Here is a link to the tutorial I've been trying to use. It's for PS which is the reason I'm having trouble I'm sure. Any ideas? Thanks.

O.k. that link helped alot! Thanks. But, I can't get it to work on all photos. If there is something else in the photo that is a similar color it too is "colored" when the rest of the photo is b&w. Here is a sample I did. It turned out pretty good except that the stamen on the flower is b&w when it's supposed to be yellow and there is some orange left here and there troughout the picture. How do I single these items out and change their color without changing the color of the flowers? Thanks again for all the help.

You can't use this for Basic Editing challenges here, but otherwise what you want to do is to create a mask or alpha channel to isolate you desired object, then use that selection (or its inverse) to apply adjustments (e.g. Curves, Channel Mixer) to specific parts of the image.

Sorry for all the questions but I'm really a ps noob. How exactly do I isolate part of the photo with mask or alpha channel? I've never used these tools before.

I don't know in GIMP. In Photoshop, you create a new channel (it will appear as a grayscale channel), and paint on it using any of the paint/drawing tools. The black/white will denote selected/masked areas, with the gray areas "partially-selected."

You get the same thing if you create a selection (e.g. with the lasso tool) and save the selection; that should create the alpha channel for you. I usually make a rough selection with the lasso tool, and then paint on the mask layer with a soft-edged brush so that the selection is pre-feathered. If you use a tablet/stylus combo, you can do this with great precision.
