I am trying to decide if purchasing a 50MM prime is worth my money. The only reason I would get one is because it would be sharper. So would anyone mind posting 100% crops of photos they took with the 50mm. Also if you know what f-stop it was taken with and what part of the photo is in the crop (center, right corner, etc), that would be much apreciated info. Thanks for the help guys.

sharper than what? it's pretty much a given it's worth the money...

It is only like $80.

Yes, it's definitely worth it's price... it is a rare exception where price beats performance.

wow, I don't have anything that sharp....I have several lens that cover the 50mm range. So it is hard to say sharper than what. Here is a 100% crop from my sigma lens:

btw...what apature was that taken at? Mine was at F5.6

Impressive ain't it? ;-)

My advice is GET IT! And use it often.

Edit to add: that shot was handheld and the wind was blowing rather wildly. I had a shutter speed of 1/90 sec at f/4.5 with ISO 100.

Wide open ain't a good idea on that sigma lens if you want some sharpness.
I have the exact same lens and it look like I get the maximum sharpness around F16...

That just doesn't look as sharp as that lens should be. What's your shutter speeds and are you shooting RAW or JPEG?

for what lens?

All were shot in jpeg....here is the sigma at 28mm at diffrent fstops:
//pixpipeline.com/users/jent/f4cb4d7
all images are labled

And here is the 100mm at diffrent fstops:

I guess the sigma is still new to me...so maybe what I should do is use it a while and see what I think of it. I need a sharp everyday walk around lens. And I am worried that the 50mm wont give me the flexability needed. And I am not one who swaps out lenses all the time. I offten find I will only swap before teh shooting and maybe (almost never) swap once in the middle. Ether way it is a lot better than my old lenses.

I was talking about the Canon 100mm lens. I've always been under the impression that it was supposed to be a really sharp lens.

iono, maybe my focus was off....I was just using the auto focus and there was plenty of light....all speeds for the 100mm were 1/350, 1/1000, or 1/1500. Iso 400

I am open to sugestions...I need to clean my sensor. You can see a pic of my sensor test image at:

thoughts?

This lens is my cheapest lens and by far my favorite for portrait photography. You simply can't beat the bokeh from a 1.8 aperature.

The 100 canon is sharp. nice lens.

the sigma 18-50 3.5-5.6 is just an average consumer lens similar to the kit lens.
the good sigma is the 18-50 2.8 EX, but wide open it's a tad soft.
sample:
f2.8, 4.0, 5.6

I had a hard time finding a shot with this lens that shows it's sharpness well - most times i use it is low light or when i need shallow aperture.
Anyway, f7.1, 100% crop no processing from a jpg capture.
