Incidentally, I have been facing a similar question.
The basic choices I have been faced with are:
1 lens kit:
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (expect it to have similar optics and build quality of the 28-75 although it's not released quite yet everywhere... might be available in the states)
OR Wait a few months and check out the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 coming out in the fall... Expect it to be a bit sharper than the Tamron with a bit more CA. They might have dealt with the CA at this point though... Definitely an interesting option.
2 lens kit:
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Canon 10-22mm ultra wide.
I had my heart set on the 2 lens kit, but finances have been looking a bit grim lately (partly thanks to my own recent 30D purchase plus a few hundred bucks in toys)
Depending on how money treats me, I will probably be going with one of the 1 lens kit options.
I hated the slowness of the kit lens, but I really liked the range.
Having a 16-50 might be pretty durned cool!
I suspect that if you don't have anything wider, you might start to kick yourself because you still end up using the 18-55 for wider stuff...
What a PITA!
My friend has a 28-105 and the kit lens and he ends up using the kit lens FAR more often.
He takes some pretty damned good pics with it too.

| Eschelar...if you get the chance you should check out the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 for a 2-lens kit option. I haven't used the Canon 10-20mm, the Tokina is a pretty awesome wide-angle, and you'd save a couple hundred. I got mine new for $400. |

I think the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 would be the biggesr bang for the buck, it's a great lens and will not dissapoint you :)

Thanks abroken. I kinda decided to get lenses I want rather than make do.
I have a few friends who I can borrow from for now.
As to the future, well I'm facing huge uncertainty in the next few months as to just about every aspect of my life.
I considered the Tokina, but I decided that if I want to go with an ultrawide, I will go with an ultrawide.
A friend of mine recently got the 10-22, so I have used it a bit.
It's good. Worth the money? Yup.
At this point, $400 is either not going to be a problem or will be totally out of my reach for the next 4-5 years.
The same goes for $600.
Biteme, don't get rid of the kit lens just yet! :) |
