your thoughts? |

I thought so also but maybe in Iceland horizontal posters are the rave. :P

Wow .. I should have left a huge black space at the top for the words to be added .. this is the "photograph for your movie's debut poster" for the poster ... it DID NOT say Poster format! ... now that is picky! And accurate. |

Well, we know one person who didn't go vertical. :)
I didn't participate in this challenge, so we all know what that means...... |

maybe thats why im scoring much lower than i expected. Is it really that big of a deal? geesh. I could have cropped differently but never even concidered it would anger people. |

I don't care if people didn't use a vertical format. It won't influence my voting.

I've seen loads of landscape format movie posters
one 10 sec google search came up with this....(superb film btw)
Leon
....and it didn't say "make up the poster" anyway it said "shoot the photograph for your movie's debut poster". If it was to make up the poster, we would have had special rules and been allowed text like in the DPC Album Cover challenge a while back.
Personally, I'm voting on the photography (and a bit for clever titles) not layout

I am looking at the image AND the title together as a unit depicting a movie, no matter what the orientation of the photo is. I am finding great shots, but a goofy title that just describes it and would in no way depict a movie to me. This is a tough one. I predict a low scoring challenge.

Like it was said in Spaceballs " I'm surrounded by Aissoles" I've seen many horizontal bill boards in movie halls. I guess picky is the word. :) |

It certainly is a tough one. I think many people had difficulties with choosing a good title. I was one of them, lol. First of all, English isn't my first language and second, it's just difficult to make a good title with only 3 words starting with D, P and C.

Count me in as picky then. I rejected several ideas because I couldn't make them work for a vertical poster. Perhaps there are indeed a lot of horizontal posters, but most that I see are vertical. And when you read the challenge, what's the first thing that came to YOUR mind? |

Sorry, but I'm not so picky. (for a change...)
This isn't a poster designing challenge, it's a challenge to take an image for a poster. All those wonderful CD and video cases at the rental shop are vertical....and lots of them have a landscape photo in the lower portion of that vertical format.
Picky? Yes, voters will be picky...especially if it wasn't the first thing that came to their mind and stuck. ;P |

yes most posters are vertical but that doesn't mean that the photos on them are vertical. mine is horizontal but i will add black to the top and bottom when i actually make it a poster (which I plan to do) I think it is wrong for those of you that are voting down horizontal ones. I will be adding 3 points to each of the horizontal ones just to counteract those that are voting them down. |

I'm a little irritated at how people are more concerned with the title and and orientation than the photo itself. Of course I get irritated with the voters/comments in every challenge, so it's biz as usual for me.
How many movie posters do you see with absolutely no text on it?
Picky is a nice way of saying it.

That's a wide assumption. I hadn't planned on voting this challenge for various (personal) reasons...but maybe I will have to find time to support the vertical entries to offset/counteract the 3 pt horizontal bonus. Geez...
edit to add...and we worry about "Outtakes" influencing voters?!

I really hope you're kidding. I'm not sure if I'll vote or not, but please don't assume that those of us who think they should be vertical will vote down because of it.
When I was planning this challenge, I tried to come up with a finished vetical (without text) poster and clever title. My goal was to come up with something that would make people want to see the movie, which includes the poster, title, subject, creativity, technical quality, etc. If I vote, that's what I'll vote on. |

People have stated that they are picky about the horizontal photos giving the impression that they will vote them lower. I am just tring to add some balance to those that didn't feel it had to be vertical. Why should they be penalized. and out of 200 + votes they will lose more than 3 points on this bias. by the way nice pun on the "Wide assumption"

Cannot help thinking that, for this challenge DPC may really stand for "Don't Pontificate: Critique!"
Just trying to figure out a photo that would support that...

thanks for being open minded. and to be honest if my score doesn't come up some I may not vote for a while if at all. I don't like to vote when I am upset as it is unfair to those who put alot of time and effort into thier photos. |

Just out of curiosity, which orientation are both of yours? |

By far, most movie posters are vertical. I won't subtract purely for being horizontal, but if it doesn't look like a poster I will subtract. If you make me want to see your movie, you'll get a good score from me, regardless of your orientation.

Voting a photo some value other than what you think it deserves on its merits as an image is a violation of the rules -- please don't. |
