Originally posted by karmabreeze: Aye that. How many movie posters have you seen where the plot is blatantly obvious from a single photo? Just a random sampling from my DVD collection: Mullholland Drive, Office Space, Boondock Saints, The Matrix, Big Fish, Whale Rider... there isn't much you can figure out from any of them. Maybe a mood, maybe a genre, but not much to connect the image to the title or tell you what's actually going on. The ability to build interest and/or intrigue and get the butts in the seats is what makes a movie poster good. But I think that lack of clarity is what's likely hurting all of us. We have the whole story in our heads, and we know why the cat is rolling around in purple donuts, and in the real world it might be the Disney tweener hit of the year. But to the average DPC voter, who has a totally different mindset, it just ends up looking like a mess. |
It's even worse than that. My picture does relate to the title and hints at the plot in a very clear way, but is still being voted down precisely for the dramatic and stylistic elements that make it an intriguing poster, because they go against the eyecandy esthetic that rules this domain.

Maybe I'll go through them all again today but that's how I am seeing it at this point. Sorry, I don't mean to be a hag. |
i'm thinking along the same lines. a good shot will get a 5, but if actually looks like a poster image, then it starts to go up...
haven't started voting yet, just perusing...

Additionally, this was a real double-whammy of a challenge - these letters are very difficult to work with, even for a regular title, and to have to make that title suggest a story instead of just a photo... aarrgh.
Only the brave entered this contest, and it looks like we're gonna get beat-up somethin' good. |
oh. i agree 100% ... my entry doesn't look like a photo at all, it looks like ...ummm ... lemme think ... errm, yes. It looks like a movie poster :-)

On contrary to one comment I received. I first got the title then the photo. I got so worked up on the title and shooting for it, now I think I should've submitted the portrait oriented crop, which I did get. pfft.

I did all that, in that order. What else do you voters want :)

yeah, it's the combination of the text and the image. i think they need to gibe, not just illustrate each other. and, ithink, a lot of the 'statement' titles would have done better if, like one entrant, they hade put (documentary) after their title.
it's a very hard challenge to score indeed.

Hmmm...let me see if I can find that one.
edit: well, looks like it's one of two - which one? ;^)

I need to stop looking at early votes. I've recovered my score at least, but I'm still quite a bit below my average vote received. |

I'm not doing too bad.... but where in the submission guideline does it say that your movie has to be a certain type of movie? I didn't see anything saying that it had to a comedy, or a thriller or action or anything like that!!! I get a comment telling me that my entry would never be a movie! And that my title is dull? Hello, like Office Space is a super exciting title?
There are all types of movies. And not just movies for the theater... what about made for TV movies? There are all sorts of movies on ABC, Family Channel, Disney, National Geographic etc etc. We have to think out further. That is what I am doing.
So, yeah.... myabe I don't have an action thriller, but mine could be a movie!

What a well-debated challenge. Unfortunately or fortunately we are in photographic challenge and not a graphic design or marketing challenge (with a different set of value's).
As far as my entry - the usual lack buster. Getting mostly positive comments with some critics pointing out things that I deliberately changed.

i'm really struggling with the scoring onthis one (still). i try and try to see a movie in all the images - whether doc, art house, action, noir, etc etc etc.
but some titles just illustrate the pic. so, i'm giving those a 5 for now (if good images) and i'll go back later and look again. is this mean of me? or am i being narrow because i really tried to do a filmic thing?
