Please HELP.....

I am so troubled, as I am having trouble taking "Night-time" images, re where distance is needed.....
I still have no idea how I should set my new "Canon" camera, apart from having it set in the "raw" process.

Can I submit am image taken at "night" but close up.

I would love to be able to use my zoom lense, and take a night shots, of a landscape/cityscape/seacsape, but have no idea how to set up the camera for this.

Running out of time so I will be submitting one of my image I have taken at night, but not like most images that will be entered.....

Will this be accepted, or knocked down re members.

Most images have been taken from 10pm up till well over midnight. Now thats night time in my book.....

Most likely, if it doesn't look like it was taken at night, it will get the DNMC comments.

As for the settings, take a tripod and put the camera on automatic. Then use those settings as a guide and bracket some shots.

The only requirement is that it be taken "after the sun goes down". Think of how many takes there are on this - aside from the predictable night landscapes, there's also night life (club hopping, the night shift, concerts, other indoor but obviously nighttime activities...) If a close-up can convey "night", then I'd say that's perfectly fine. :-)

If it looks like it was taken at night it should be fine. You might even be better off having something different--voters tend to appreciate a new idea. I am looking forward to voting on both of the open challenges.

I have taken some night shots with my Rebel, but I just set the aperture, used a tripod and hoped for the best. Most came out pretty good, but I also would like to know what settings are best. I have never used raw, so I am no help there. Always fun to experiment if you have the time. Good luck!

What about a "night-time" sillhouette type shot.....

I would not have a problem with that, in fact it sounds interesting.

I took several that were "different" but hesitate to put them in. I guess they'd think I "faked" it being at night, although it was definitely cark as pitch.

"Fake being at night?" I will not lower my vote if it looks like a night shot but was done at 12 noon.

For example, If you enter a shot of your sleeping triplets in a darkend room but I found out that it was really naptime, I will not lower the vote cast.

I second what lepidus said, as quoted.
I dont think it really matters what time the shot is taken, or whatever subject you have decided to shoot, but if the photo fails to convey the spirit of the challenge's topic, then expect a faily low score from the voters.

How about one taken at night, but it was inside a dark auditorium?

I have a shot I really like, but it was taken only an hour after sunset. My PP led me down a path that makes it look earlier in the day. I guess we'll see if get the DNMC comments/votes!

sherpet if you look in my profile you will see a couple of night shots. The exif data is included if you want an idea of where to start. Just save them to desktop and view exif.

I wouldn't vote down a non-landscape shot. I had some ideas about interior shots that had a nighttime sky visible through a window. Student pulling an all-nighter. Children sleeping with moon visble through the window. Airplane silhouetted against the full moon. Couple kissing good night at the front door. I think those would all work if the "night" was a key piece of the composition.

But I'm new here.
