WOW, what a nice tool. I never knew how much this tool helps. Only recently did I read somewhere (I think on this sit) that a digital camera automatically makes the image "softer" and that it is always wise to do a bit of post sharpening.
For the past week or two, I do all my photos in RAW and then sharpen them using UNSHARP MASK. Wow, what a big diference.

YOU BIG BOYS MUST LOOK OUT - I am catching up with you guys at a rapid pace. WARNING - at my current rate I will manage to get above 6 avg for a challenge in about..... 8 to 10 years.

DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU!!!!!

Another thing I do with USM is to sharpen my layer "a little" then repeat it over and over until I get the sharping I want. This seems to work a little better than sharpening "all at once" with a large slide of the slider to the right!

Most digital cameras have an anti-aliasing filter in the optical path that scatters the light slightly to reduce aliasing and moire effects. That filter acts as a low pass filter excluding fine detail. The camera can artificially sharpen the image internally and most low cost P&S cameras do this to excess. The advanced amateur and professionals with DSLR cameras and some high end P&S cameras can select the amount, or even eliminate in camera sharpening and use sharpening techniques available in Photoshop or other image processing utilities. The unsharp mask (USM) is one of the better sharpening utilities but has it's drawbacks as well. An unsightly edgeline frequently appears when the image is sharpened to the desired amount. For this reason Adobe developed a utility called "Smart Sharpen" that has less tendency to produce these edge contrast lines.
But USM is a very capable utility and used carefully yields fine results. USM can also be used to improve the 'livliness' of the image by using a radius of 250 pixels, amount setting of around 25%, and a threshold value around 5.
