I took concert photos last year with a 100-400 lens on my 20D camera and the pictures came out good but there were a lot of blured pictures as well. Does anyone have experience with this and would it be better to use a 180 Macro lens instead? |

Can you post some for us to see?
What was the cause of the blur - subject movement or camera shake?
What ISO/shutter/ap did you use?
Faster shutter speed is probably the solution, and since concerts are dark places you need a faster lens than you have. a 70-200 2.8 maybe, or if you can get closer an 85 1.8 or the new 1.2, 50 1.4. The 180 is only 3.5 wihich is faster than your 100-400 (depending on your zoom setting) but still not a fast lens.

The concert light was likely "not like bright sunlite" and you had to use a slow shutter speed. If you were at 300mm taking the photo, you should at least be at shutter speed 1/300 or more if possible. Anything under that and you will likely see a blur.
However, for your cam to be at 1/300 you may need more light...therefore you will increase your ISO....which results in more noise...!!! So you see, just like taking any pictures...I like to explain photography to "newbies" in my family ...that "it is like a dance and ISO, shutter speed, lens length, lighting etc..." are the steps that all have to come together in order for you to be a good "dancer".
On another note, a faster lens(one with "lower" numbers of Appature" ie 2.8 or 1.8 etc)...will require "less" light in order to capture good pics. So just switching to another say...100mm lens is not all that is needed to get the blur out...
...hope this helps...

Gig photos are almost always taken at F2.8, so yes, use the fastest lens you have. The standard lens to use is a 70-200mm F2.8, or a 300mm F2.8 for a lot of press snappers.

Thank you for all the helpful information.
I will be going to another concert at the end of May. And my seats are in the lower tier, 3rd row unfortunatley I couldn't get a press pass to get close to the stage. So I will use a 1.4x teleconverter and then either my 180 3.5 Macro or my 100 2.8 Macro, correct.
I tried to post the pictures that show blurr from the last concert, but being new to this forum/web site I do not know how to do this. My pictures are JPG and it asks for a URL.
